Chapter 13: The Man Who Was Watching Us

The storage unit smelled like dust, metal, and old secrets.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not the boxes.

Not the photographs.

Not the evidence stacked neatly on shelves.

The smell.

Like a place where someone had hidden pieces of a life they never wanted discovered.

Detective Harris stood beside me as officers opened the unit.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone already knew what we were about to find.

Michael’s secrets.

The first box was filled with documents.

The second contained photographs.

The third made me stop breathing.

My family.

Pictures of me.

Pictures of Jayla.

Pictures of my old house.

Some were recent.

Some were years old.

Years before I ever met Michael.

I picked up one photograph with shaking hands.

It showed me standing outside a coffee shop.

Jayla was beside me.

She was seven years old.

I remembered that day.

I remembered buying her a cookie because she finished her homework.

I remembered laughing when chocolate covered her face.

But I never remembered seeing a camera.

“How?”” I whispered.

Detective Harris looked at the date.

“Six years before your marriage.””

My stomach turned.

Six years.

Before Michael.

Before the wedding.

Before he became part of our lives.

“He was watching us.””

The words left my mouth quietly.

Nobody corrected me.

Because it was true.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Then an officer found another box.

Inside were notebooks.

Hundreds of pages.

Michael’s handwriting.

Detective Harris opened the first one carefully.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

“Emily Bennett does not know how much she needs me yet.””

I stepped back.

The room spun.

I couldn’t keep reading.

But Detective Harris had to.

He turned pages.

“He documented your relationship.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no normal explanation.

The notebook continued.

“She trusts too easily.””

“She needs someone to protect her.””

“She will eventually understand that I am the only person who can keep her safe.””

My hands curled into fists.

He wasn’t loving me.

He was studying me.

Planning me.

Controlling me.

Then Detective Harris stopped.

“What?””

I asked.

He looked at another page.

“This is about Daniel.””

He read silently for a moment.

Then:

“Daniel is a weakness.””

I looked at my brother.

Michael knew.

He knew Daniel would question him.

He knew Daniel cared.

He knew exactly where the resistance would come from.

Then another line caught my attention.

“Andrew is the biggest threat.””

My heart stopped.

Andrew.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

Andrew.

“Why was he afraid of him?”” I asked.

Detective Harris turned the page.

The next entry answered.

“Andrew knows what happened.””

Silence.

“What happened?””

The detective kept reading.

“He knows about the accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“The accident?””

Then another line.

“The night Emily forgot.””

I felt dizzy.

The night I collapsed.

The night I lost pieces of my memory.

It wasn’t just an accident.

It was the moment Michael created the life he wanted.

An officer approached.

“Detective.””

He held a small envelope.

“We found this hidden behind the wall.””

Detective Harris opened it.

Inside was a letter.

No name.

No address.

Just a date.

The day before my wedding to Michael.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Mine.

My hands shook.

“I wrote that?””

Detective Harris nodded.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“If anything happens to me, please remember that Michael found me before I found him.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The letter continued.

“I don’t know why he knows so much about my life. I don’t know why he keeps appearing whenever I need help. I don’t know why he seems to already know my fears.””

My knees weakened.

I had written this.

But I didn’t remember.

The next line was worse.

“I think Michael is hiding something about Andrew.””

I looked at Jayla.

She was crying.

“Mommy…”

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember writing this.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“That may be because someone wanted you not to remember.””

Then my phone rang.

Michael.

Everyone stared.

I answered.

“Emily.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You found the storage unit.””

I didn’t speak.

“You always were curious.””

My anger exploded.

“You watched us.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because I needed to know you.””

“You were stalking me.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I was protecting you.””

I almost laughed.

“From what?””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“From Andrew.””

I looked at Jayla.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did you hurt my daughter?””

Silence.

The first real silence.

Then Michael whispered:

“I never hurt Jayla.””

My heart froze.

“What?””

“She was never the target.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then who was?””

His answer came quietly.

“You.””

The call ended.

And at that exact moment, Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

May you like

Then his face changed.

“Michael Bennett has disappeared.””
