Chapter 14: The Last Secret

For twelve hours, nobody knew where Michael was.

Not the police.

Not his family.

Not even the people who had spent years helping him hide.

But one thing became clear.

He had left behind everything except one thing.

A message.

Detective Harris found it inside the storage unit.

Written on the back of a photograph.

My photograph.

The message said:

“Emily, you never asked the most important question.””

I stared at the words.

“What question?””

Detective Harris turned the photograph over.

On the back, Michael had written:

“Why did I choose you?””

The answer should have been obvious.

Control.

Obsession.

Power.

But something about the question bothered me.

Because Michael wanted me to know.

He wanted me to understand.

And that meant there was something bigger.

Andrew arrived that afternoon.

For the first time, I saw him standing near Jayla.

Not as a stranger.

Not as a missing piece of our history.

As her father.

He looked terrified.

“Jayla.””

She didn’t respond.

“I know you don’t know me.””

She looked at him.

“I should.””

Andrew’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked away.

“I needed you.””

“I know.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I know.””

The pain in his voice was real.

But pain wasn’t enough.

Not anymore.

Jayla had spent years needing actions.

Not apologies.

Andrew nodded.

“I’m going to tell you everything.””

We all sat together.

And he began.

“Michael knew about me before you met him.””

I looked up.

“How?””

“Because he found records from your divorce.””

My stomach tightened.

“He knew I was trying to reconnect with Jayla.””

“What did he do?””

“He convinced me you hated me.””

“And you believed him?””

Andrew looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

“He was good at making people doubt themselves.””

That was the truth.

The terrifying truth.

“He didn’t just manipulate you,” I said.

Andrew looked at me.

“He manipulated all of us.””

Detective Harris entered with new information.

“We found Michael’s car.””

Everyone turned.

“Where?””

“Near the old Bennett house.””

My heart stopped.

The house where I lived before Michael.

The house where everything started.

We went there immediately.

The place looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Overgrown grass.

But inside, it felt strangely familiar.

Detective Harris searched the rooms.

Then he called out.

“Mrs. Bennett.””

I walked toward him.

He stood in the old bedroom.

My bedroom.

On the wall were photographs.

Hundreds.

My life.

My daughter.

Andrew.

Daniel.

All arranged like a timeline.

Like Michael had been studying us.

Then I saw something that made me freeze.

A picture of me holding baby Jayla.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

“Her weakness.””

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

Then another note.

“Make her believe she needs me.””

My entire body shook.

“He never loved me.””

Andrew looked at the wall.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“He wanted ownership.””

Then we found the final box.

Inside was a video recorder.

A single tape.

Detective Harris played it.

Michael appeared on the screen.

Older.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

“Emily,” he said.

My heart stopped hearing his voice.

“If you are watching this, then you finally know.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“I did everything because you refused to see the truth.””

I clenched my fists.

“The truth is you needed me.””

The video continued.

“You were alone. You were vulnerable. Andrew abandoned you. Daniel was too weak to protect you.””

I felt anger rising.

“But I was there.””

The screen flickered.

Then Michael said:

“And I knew from the beginning that Jayla would be the key.””

Everyone froze.

The detective paused.

“What did he mean?””

Then the video continued.

“I knew Emily would do anything for her daughter.””

My blood ran cold.

“He didn’t choose Jayla because she was the problem.””

Andrew whispered.

“He chose her because she was Emily’s greatest love.””

The tape ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Harris received a call.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“We found Michael.””

“Where?””

A pause.

“He’s at the hospital.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

May you like

The detective looked at the floor.

“Because he turned himself in.””
