Chapter 6: The Night Everyone Lied

I couldn’t speak.

The words on the page didn’t make sense.

The night I almost died.

I had never told Jayla about any night like that.

Because I didn’t remember one.

I looked at Detective Harris.

“What is she talking about?””

He glanced at the notebook.

Then at Jayla.

“Jayla, explain.””

She hugged herself.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Tell us what you know.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Last year, when Mommy was working late, Michael and Uncle Daniel were arguing.””

My heart dropped.

“Where?””

“At our house.””

“When?””

She looked at the notebook.

“June eighteenth.””

I froze.

June eighteenth.

The night I woke up in the hospital.

The night Michael told me I had fainted from exhaustion.

I had always remembered pieces.

The bright lights.

The smell of antiseptic.

Michael holding my hand.

His worried face.

“You told me I collapsed in the kitchen,” I whispered.

Jayla nodded.

“That’s what he said.””

“But?””

She looked away.

“But I heard them arguing before.””

My hands went cold.

“What were they arguing about?””

“I don’t know.””

“Jayla.””

She closed her eyes.

“I heard Uncle Daniel say, ‘You promised this would be over.’”

The room went silent.

Detective Harris immediately wrote it down.

“What happened after?””

“Michael told him to calm down.””

“And then?””

“I heard something break.””

My breathing became shallow.

“What broke?””

“I don’t know.””

Jayla looked at me.

“Then I heard you fall.””

Everything stopped.

I felt like I was back in that moment.

The kitchen floor.

The spinning room.

The confusion.

But now there was something else.

A question.

Was it really an accident?

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I whispered.

Jayla started crying.

“Because Michael told me not to.””

“What did he say?””

She wiped her face.

“He said if I loved you, I would keep quiet.””

My heart shattered.

A child had been carrying this alone.

Because an adult had used her love for me as a weapon.

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Jayla, did you see Daniel after your mother fell?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Right before Michael called the ambulance.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He was there.””

My voice was barely audible.

“Daniel was in our house?””

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth.

All these years.

All these memories.

All the explanations I accepted.

Suddenly none of them felt real.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Mrs. Bennett, did anyone investigate the fall?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because everyone thought it was exhaustion.””

He looked at the report.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“The original emergency report mentions a possible head injury.””

I frowned.

“Yes.””

“But your medical records show you were treated for a medication reaction.””

I stared.

“What?””

Detective Harris turned the page.

“Mrs. Bennett, did you take any medication that night?””

“No.””

The room became colder.

“I don’t take anything stronger than pain relievers.””

Jayla whispered:

“Michael gave you something.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know what it was.””

“Jayla.””

“He told me it was your vitamins.””

My entire body froze.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I caused it.””

The words came out broken.

“I thought if I told you, you would hate me.””

I moved toward her.

“No.””

I held her face.

“Listen to me. None of this is your fault.””

She cried into my hands.

“I should have protected you.””

“You were fifteen.””

The detective looked at the notebook again.

“Jayla, is there anything else?””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“There’s one more thing.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She reached into the notebook and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Not the missing page.

Something else.

“I found this hidden in Michael’s desk.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

It was a copy of a document.

A legal document.

At the top were the words:

*Emergency Guardianship Agreement.*

I scanned the page.

Then I saw my signature.

My fake signature.

My name.

A document claiming that if anything happened to me, Michael would have full custody of Jayla.

I looked at my daughter.

“When did you find this?””

“Two weeks ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because the person who gave it to me said you already knew.””

“Who?””

Jayla looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Uncle Daniel.””

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Daniel.

Only one sentence.

“Emily, you need to hear my side before Michael tells you the truth.””

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“Because the baby isn’t the biggest secret Jayla has been hiding.””

And below it was a photo.

A photo of Michael.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

May you like

My hospital bed.

Taken the night I almost died.
