Chapter 7: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I stared at the photograph until my vision blurred.
It was impossible.
That was the only thought my mind could form.
Impossible.
The picture showed Michael standing beside my hospital bed.
My face was turned away, my eyes closed, wires attached to my body.
But it wasn’t the picture itself that terrified me.
It was the person standing beside him.
Daniel.
My brother.
Both of them were looking at something outside the frame.
Not worried.
Not scared.
Talking.
Like they belonged there.
Like my pain was just another conversation.
“Where did you get this?”” I whispered.
Jayla shook her head.
“Uncle Daniel sent it.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“I think he wants us to be afraid of Michael.””
“And Michael wants us to be afraid of Daniel.””
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the truth felt even darker.
What if they were both guilty?
What if they were both telling pieces of the truth?
Detective Harris studied the image.
“Can you forward this to me?””
I nodded.
My hands felt numb as I sent it.
A few seconds later, his phone buzzed.
He zoomed in.
“This appears to have been taken inside the hospital.””
“Yes,” I said.
“When you were admitted?””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Did Daniel have a reason to be there?””
I swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
The worst part was admitting that.
I didn’t know.
I knew my brother’s favorite food.
His childhood fears.
The way he laughed when he was nervous.
But I didn’t know where he was the night I nearly died.
I didn’t know why he had received twenty thousand dollars from my husband.
I didn’t know why he had a picture of me unconscious.
Rachel sat beside Jayla.
“Emily, you need to remember something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“You don’t have to solve everything today.””
But I did.
Because my daughter had spent months waiting.
Because every day we waited was another day Michael and Daniel had to prepare.
Detective Harris stood.
“I want to speak with Daniel.””
My phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Daniel.
Everyone saw his name.
Nobody moved.
Then Jayla whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
I almost didn’t.
But I needed to know.
I pressed accept.
“Daniel.””
His voice immediately sounded tired.
“Emily.””
There was no anger.
No panic.
Just sadness.
“I know you’re upset.””
“Upset?””
I laughed quietly.
“My daughter is pregnant. My husband has been threatening her. You’re involved somehow. And you call me upset?””
Silence.
Then:
“I didn’t hurt Jayla.””
“Then explain the money.””
Another silence.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
“I was trying to.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel sighed.
“I knew Michael was dangerous.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to find proof.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you watched?””
“No.””
“You knew something was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me leave my daughter with him?””
His silence answered.
I felt something break inside me.
“You should have protected her.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I know, Emily.””
For one second, I heard my little brother again.
The boy who used to apologize after stealing my candy.
But then I remembered Jayla crying.
I remembered the fear in her eyes.
“I need the truth.””
“I’m going to give it to you.””
“When?””
“Tonight.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere Michael can’t hear us.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
He shook his head.
Don’t go alone.
I understood.
“Send me the location.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Emily, before you come, there’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
“The night you collapsed…”
My heart stopped.
“What about it?””
His voice lowered.
“I wasn’t there because of Michael.””
“Then why?””
A long pause.
Then he whispered:
“Because I found out he was planning to take Jayla away from you.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Detective Harris immediately asked:
“What did he say?””
I looked at Jayla.
She was crying silently.
“He said Michael was planning to take her away from me.””
The detective nodded slowly.
“Then we need to know why.””
An hour later, Daniel sent the location.
A quiet coffee shop on the edge of town.
Public.
Safe.
But before we left, I checked my phone one more time.
A message had arrived.
From Michael.
My blood went cold.
“Don’t meet Daniel.””
I stared.
Then another message appeared.
“He’s not trying to save you.””
A third message followed.
“He’s trying to save himself.””
I looked at Jayla.
She saw my face.
“What did he say?””
I showed her.
She went pale.
“Mommy…”
“What?””
She pointed at the screen.
“He knows.””
“Knows what?””
Her voice shook.
“He knows Uncle Daniel is talking.””
And then my phone received one final message.
Not from Michael.
Not from Daniel.
May you like
From the unknown number.
“Ask Daniel who paid for the hospital room.””
