Chapter 11: The Man They Hid From Me

I couldn’t move.

The voice on the phone was unfamiliar.

But the words felt like they had been waiting years to reach me.

“The man Michael spent six years trying to erase.””

I looked at Jayla.

Her eyes were wide.

She knew.

“Who are you?””

The man sighed.

“My name is Andrew.””

The room went silent.

Jayla covered her mouth.

Daniel looked away.

And I realized everyone except me knew that name.

“Andrew what?””

Another pause.

“Reed.””

My fingers went numb.

Andrew Reed.

Jayla’s biological father.

The man I had been told abandoned us.

The man Michael claimed didn’t care.

The man I had spent six years believing walked away from his daughter.

I gripped the phone.

“You’re alive.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

Silence.

A painful silence.

“Because I was told you didn’t want me contacting Jayla.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Michael told me you had moved on.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Jayla.

“Who told you that?””

“Michael.””

My anger rose.

“Why would you believe him?””

“Because he showed me messages.””

“What messages?””

“He showed me conversations between you and him.””

I felt dizzy.

“Fake conversations?””

“Yes.””

For six years.

Michael had built a lie.

And everyone had lived inside it.

Detective Harris motioned for me to put the phone on speaker.

I did.

Andrew continued.

“I found out last year that the messages were fake.””

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

“Because Michael threatened me.””

Jayla whispered:

“With what?””

Andrew heard her.

“Jayla?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“It’s me.””

The other end went silent.

Then his voice cracked.

“Jayla.””

She looked away.

“I don’t know you.””

Those words hurt.

Even though they were true.

Andrew took a shaky breath.

“I know.””

Detective Harris spoke.

“Mr. Reed, we need you to come in and provide a statement.””

“I will.””

“Before that, explain the hospital footage.””

Andrew became quiet.

“I accessed it because I was trying to prove Michael was lying.””

“About what?””

“About the night Emily collapsed.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Andrew continued.

“I received an anonymous message three weeks ago.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did it say?””

“That my daughter was in danger.””

Jayla looked at me.

“What?””

Andrew continued.

“It included a photo of Michael.””

My blood ran cold.

“What photo?””

“A photo of him watching Jayla sleep.””

The room froze.

Nobody spoke.

Detective Harris immediately asked:

“Do you still have the message?””

“Yes.””

“Send it now.””

A minute later, Detective Harris’s phone buzzed.

He opened the image.

Then his expression changed.

I didn’t want to see it.

But I did.

It was taken through Jayla’s bedroom doorway.

Michael was standing there.

Watching.

The date was from two months ago.

I felt sick.

Because I remembered that night.

I had been working.

I had called home.

Michael answered.

He told me:

“Jayla is asleep.””

He had sounded normal.

Calm.

A good husband.

A good stepfather.

But the picture told a different story.

Andrew spoke again.

“I came back because I wanted to protect her.””

Jayla wiped her tears.

“Why now?””

“Because I realized Michael didn’t just lie to me.””

A pause.

“He lied to you.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

My entire adult life had been built around people telling me what was true.

Michael.

Daniel.

Andrew.

Everyone had a version.

But only one person had been paying the price.

My daughter.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“We need to move quickly.””

“Why?””

“Because if Michael knows Andrew contacted us, he may run.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Michael.

I opened it.

“Congratulations.””

My stomach dropped.

Another message followed.

“You finally found the missing piece.””

Then another.

“But you still don’t know why I did it.””

I stared.

Then the final message arrived.

“You think I hurt Jayla because I wanted control.””

A pause.

Then:

“You’re wrong.””

My hands trembled.

Because the last message wasn’t a threat.

May you like

It was a warning.

“I was protecting you from what Jayla did.””
