Chapter 9: The Person Vanessa Trusted Most
I listened to the recording three times.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I couldn’t accept it.
Vanessa wasn’t trying to fix a problem.
She was creating one.
She wanted me to doubt my own daughter.
She wanted me to think Emma was the reason our family was falling apart.
I sat alone in the dark living room after Emma went to sleep.
The recording played quietly from my phone.
Vanessa’s voice.
Robert’s voice.
Their plan.
Every word felt like another piece of my life breaking apart.
The next morning, Detective Mills returned.
She brought Rachel with her.
The moment Emma saw Rachel, she ran to her.
“Rachel!””
Rachel dropped to her knees and hugged her.
“I’m sorry.””
Emma held on tightly.
“You came back.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I watched them.
And I realized something painful.
A woman who wasn’t related to Emma had protected her better than the person who promised to love her.
Detective Mills sat at the table.
“We need to clarify a few things.””
Rachel nodded.
“I’m ready.””
She pulled out a notebook.
“When I worked here, I noticed Vanessa treated Emma differently.””
“How?””
“She would praise Tyler and Madison constantly.””
Rachel looked at Emma.
“But Emma was always blamed.””
I asked quietly.
“Why didn’t you confront her?””
“I did.””
Rachel looked down.
“She fired me.””
My jaw tightened.
“She told me I was jealous.””
Detective Mills wrote that down.
Rachel continued.
“After I left, I worried about Emma.””
“That’s why you installed the camera?””
“Yes.””
“Was that legal?””
Rachel hesitated.
“I know it was wrong.””
She looked at Emma.
“But leaving her alone felt worse.””
I understood.
Because if Rachel hadn’t done it, I might still believe Vanessa.
Detective Mills opened a file.
“We also found something else.””
My attention shifted.
“What?””
She placed a document on the table.
“It concerns financial activity.””
I frowned.
“What does money have to do with this?””
Detective Mills looked at me.
“Your daughter’s trust account.””
My expression changed.
“What about it?””
“Several withdrawals were made.””
My heart sank.
“How much?””
She slid the paper forward.
I looked down.
The number made me stop breathing.
$18,000.
I looked at Rachel.
“Was this for Emma?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
My hands tightened.
“Where did the money go?””
Detective Mills answered.
“To payments connected to Robert Hale.””
I stared at the name.
The attorney.
The man who came into my house pretending to protect my family.
Suddenly everything made sense.
The fake reports.
The custody papers.
The lies.
They weren’t just trying to control Emma.
They were building something.
A plan.
I stood up.
“I need to find Vanessa.””
Detective Mills stopped me.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“She may already know we found the records.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means she might act quickly.””
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then I heard breathing.
“Who is this?””
A child’s voice answered.
Not Emma.
A boy.
Tyler.
“Daniel…”
I stood frozen.
“Tyler? Where are you?””
His voice shook.
“She knows.””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“My mom.””
I looked around the room.
“Tyler, where are you?””
His voice became a whisper.
“She found out I helped you.””
A loud sound came from his end.
Like a door closing.
“Tyler?””
No answer.
Then, just before the call ended, I heard Vanessa’s voice in the background.
“Give me the phone.””
The line went dead.
And on my screen, a new message appeared.
A picture.
It showed Tyler sitting inside a car.
His face was terrified.

Under the picture was one sentence:
*Come alone if you want to see him again.*
