Chapter 5: The Secret Emma Kept
After Vanessa left, the house felt completely different.
The woman I had built a life with had walked out like she was leaving behind a battle.
Not a family.
I sat beside Emma on her bed.
She was quiet.
Too quiet.
I had seen her cry.
I had seen her scared.
But this was different.
This was a child carrying a secret.
“Emma.””
She looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Why did you hide the phone?””
Her eyes dropped.
“I didn’t want Mommy to be mad.””
“I’m not asking because I’m angry.””
She held her stuffed rabbit tighter.
“Mommy said bad things would happen if you knew.””
I felt a wave of anger.
“What bad things?””
She looked at the floor.
“She said you would choose her.””
My chest tightened.
“Baby, I will always choose you.””
Emma nodded slowly.
But she didn’t look convinced.
That hurt more than anything.
I pulled out the phone again.
“Rachel said there are things I don’t know.””
Emma became nervous.
“Daddy…”
“What?””
She looked toward the closed bedroom door.
“She told me not to talk about the closet.””
I stood immediately.
“The closet?””
Emma pointed.
“The other closet.””
I followed her finger.
It was a small storage closet near her desk.
I opened it.
Inside were old toys, blankets, and boxes.
Nothing unusual.
I turned around.
“What am I looking for?””
Emma walked closer.
She moved a stuffed bear from the corner.
Behind it was a small crack in the wall.
My heartbeat changed.
“What is that?””
Emma whispered.
“Mommy said it was nothing.””
I moved the boxes away.
There was a tiny opening.
Not big.
But big enough for something to be placed inside.
I reached in.
My fingers touched something.
A small envelope.
I pulled it out.
Emma immediately stepped back.
“I wasn’t supposed to touch it.””
I looked at the envelope.
My name was written on it.
Daniel.
My hands went numb.
I opened it.
Inside were printed documents.
The first page was a financial statement.
The second was a list.
A list of expenses.
My eyes scanned the numbers.
Then I saw Emma’s name.
Under it were notes.
“School.””
“Clothes.””
“Medical.””
Then a handwritten comment:
“Too much money wasted.””
I felt sick.
This wasn’t about food.
This was planned.
Someone had been keeping track.
I grabbed my phone and called my lawyer.
Before he answered, I heard a noise outside.
A car door.
I looked through the window.
Vanessa was back.
But she wasn’t alone.
A man was standing beside her.
Older.
Wearing a suit.
I didn’t recognize him.
My lawyer answered.
“Daniel?””
I kept watching the window.
“I found something.””
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
My eyes stayed on the man outside.
“Someone is here.””
The man looked directly at the house.
Like he knew I was watching.
“Who?”” my lawyer asked.
I didn’t know.
But then Vanessa opened the front door.
She walked inside.
The man followed.
“Daniel,” she said.
Her voice was calm again.
Too calm.
“I want you to meet someone.””
The man stepped forward.
“My name is Robert Hale.””
I stared at him.
“Who are you?””
He looked at Emma.
Then back at me.
“I’m the person who helped Vanessa protect this family.””
My stomach dropped.
“Protect?””
Robert nodded.
“From the truth about Emma.””
Emma grabbed my hand.
“Daddy…”
I looked at Robert.
“What are you talking about?””
He reached into his briefcase.
Pulled out a folder.
May you like
And placed it on the table.
“Everything you need to know about your daughter is inside.””
