Chapter 10: The Price of Silence
I stared at the picture on my phone until the screen went dark.
Tyler was sitting in the backseat of a car.
His face was pale.
His eyes were wide.
He looked scared.
Not like a child who was caught doing something wrong.
Like a child who realized the person he trusted most could hurt him too.
“Daniel?””
Detective Mills’ voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
“She has Tyler.””
Everyone at the table froze.
Rachel immediately stood.
“Vanessa?””
I nodded.
“She sent me this.””
I showed them the picture.
Detective Mills studied it carefully.
“Did she say where to go?””
“No.””
“Did she threaten you?””
I looked at the message again.
Come alone if you want to see him again.
I didn’t need more proof.
“Yes.””
Detective Mills reached for her phone.
“Do not respond yet.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“I’m going.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“That’s a child.””
“I know.””
“Then you understand.””
Her expression stayed firm.
“Which is why you cannot walk into a situation without a plan.””
I hated that she was right.
But every second felt impossible.
Tyler had helped Emma.
He had finally done the right thing.
And now he was paying for it.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Vanessa.
*You ruined everything.*
Then another.
*You always thought Emma was innocent. Now you’ll see what happens when children betray their parents.*
My hands shook.
Rachel read the messages over my shoulder.
“She’s blaming the kids.””
I looked at her.
“She always did.””
Detective Mills looked at me.
“Daniel, I need you to answer one question.””
“What?””
“Does Vanessa have access to any other property? Any place she could take him?””
I thought.
Then I remembered.
The cabin.
A small vacation house Vanessa and I bought two years earlier.
She loved going there.
Nobody knew about it except family.
I told Detective Mills.
Twenty minutes later, we were driving.
I sat in the passenger seat, staring at the road.
My mind kept returning to Emma.
To the empty plate.
To the way she looked at me.
Like she wasn’t sure if I would believe her.
I had spent months protecting my own comfort.
I wanted to believe my marriage was fine.
I wanted to believe Vanessa was just struggling.
But my daughter had been begging for help in the only ways she knew how.
And I ignored her.
When we arrived at the cabin, Detective Mills stopped the car a distance away.
The lights were on.
“There,” she whispered.
A car was parked outside.
Vanessa’s.
I looked toward the window.
A shadow moved.
Detective Mills raised her hand.
“Stay here.””
I shook my head.
“She knows I’m coming.””
“That doesn’t mean she wants you there.””
Before I could answer, the front door opened.
Vanessa stepped outside.
She wasn’t surprised.
She was waiting.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
I stepped forward.
“Where is Tyler?””
She smiled sadly.
“You came for him.””
“Where is he?””
“You never came this fast for me.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She walked closer.
“You spent years believing Emma needed you.””
My face hardened.
“She does.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. She needs someone who will save her from herself.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Where is Tyler?””
Her smile disappeared.
“Inside.””
I moved.
She blocked me.
“Wait.””
“You don’t get to tell me to wait.””
“You want Tyler?””
“Yes.””
“Then you need to listen.””
I looked at her.
“Listen to what?””
She lowered her voice.
“The truth.””
I almost laughed.
“The truth?””
“Yes.””
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small envelope.
“I have proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She looked toward the cabin.
“Proof that Emma isn’t who you think she is.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t.””
“You asked for the truth.””
She held out the envelope.
“Open it.””
I didn’t move.
“Where’s Tyler?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Still choosing her?””
I froze.
“Choosing who?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Your daughter.””
Then the cabin door behind her opened.
Tyler appeared.
But he wasn’t alone.
Someone was standing behind him.
May you like
Someone I never expected.
And when I saw who it was, I forgot how to breathe.
