Chapter 7: The Plan Hidden in the Papers

Emma’s finger hovered over the last page.

Nobody spoke.

Not Vanessa.

Not Robert.

Not me.

The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the kitchen doorway.

“Emma,” I whispered.

“What did they plan to do?””

Her eyes moved between Vanessa and Robert.

She looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not guessing.

Terrified.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, she doesn’t understand what she’s saying.””

I looked at her.

“Then why are you scared?””

She stopped.

That was all the answer I needed.

I pulled the folder closer and flipped to the final page.

At first, it looked like another legal document.

Then I saw the title.

“Temporary Custody Preparation.””

My hands went cold.

I looked at Robert.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“It’s not what you think.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s what you said about the garbage.””

I kept reading.

The document described a plan.

A plan to collect “evidence” that Emma was unstable.

A plan to create a record of “behavioral concerns.””

A plan to make me question my own daughter.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were building a case against her?””

“No.””

“Then explain this.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Robert stepped in.

“Mr. Carter, these documents were created as a precaution.””

“A precaution?””

I pointed at the papers.

“You were preparing to take my daughter away from me.””

“That’s not the purpose.””

“Then what was?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Emma.

She was standing in the corner again.

The same corner where I found her eating crusts.

The same place she had probably learned to disappear.

I walked toward her.

“Come here.””

She ran into my arms.

I held her tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

Her small voice came against my chest.

“I tried to tell you.””

Those words destroyed me.

“I know.””

“No, Daddy.””

She pulled back slightly.

“I tried lots of times.””

I froze.

“What do you mean?””

Emma wiped her eyes.

“Remember when I spilled the juice?””

I nodded.

“That was because Mommy yelled at me.””

My breathing stopped.

“She told me if I told you, she would make you angry.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She threatened a five-year-old.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was trying to control the situation.””

“She was scared of you.””

“She needed boundaries.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“She needed protection.””

Robert picked up the folder.

“You need to understand Vanessa was under stress.””

I turned toward him.

“You keep defending her.””

“That’s my job.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Your job was to help her hide this.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

It was a message from my lawyer.

*Do not let them remove Emma from the home. I’m sending someone immediately.*

I showed the message to Vanessa.

Her face changed.

“You called your lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“You’re really doing this?””

I looked at her.

“You did this the moment you decided my daughter wasn’t your family.””

She grabbed her purse.

“Fine.””

I watched her carefully.

“Where are you going?””

She looked toward Emma.

“I’m not leaving without my children.””

My eyes moved to Tyler and Madison, who were still upstairs.

“They’re welcome to stay.””

Her face tightened.

“They’re coming with me.””

Then Tyler appeared at the top of the stairs.

“No.””

Everyone looked up.

Vanessa froze.

“Tyler.””

He slowly walked down.

“I’m not going.””

Her expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Tyler swallowed.

“I heard everything.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I do.””

He looked at Emma.

“I saw her crying.””

The room became silent.

Tyler’s voice shook.

“I thought Mom was just being strict.””

He looked ashamed.

“But I knew the food thing was wrong.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Tyler, don’t.””

He backed away.

“No.””

It was the first time he had ever stood up to her.

And Vanessa noticed.

“You’re choosing them?””

Tyler looked at Emma.

Then me.

“I’m choosing what’s right.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

But before she could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Everyone turned.

I walked toward it.

When I opened the door, I saw a woman standing there.

She held a badge in her hand.

And behind her were two police officers.

She looked directly at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.

“Yes?””

May you like

The woman held up a document.

“You are being served.””
