Chapter 8: The Truth Rachel Recorded

Vanessa didn’t move.

For several seconds, she just stared at the papers.

Then she laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“This is ridiculous.””

The woman remained calm.

“My name is Detective Lauren Mills. We received evidence regarding potential child neglect and emotional abuse.””

The room went completely still.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You did this?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was, I didn’t know if I had done enough.

I only knew I should have acted sooner.

Detective Mills looked at Emma.

Her expression softened.

“Emma, can I ask you some questions?””

Emma immediately grabbed my hand.

I knelt beside her.

“You don’t have to be afraid.””

She nodded.

Detective Mills sat down.

“Can you tell me what happened today?””

Emma looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“She said I wasn’t allowed to eat with them.””

Detective Mills wrote something down.

“Who is them?””

“Tyler and Madison.””

“And what happened after that?””

Emma looked down.

“She gave me the crusts.””

“The crusts from where?””

Emma whispered.

“The trash.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“She’s exaggerating.””

Detective Mills looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, please don’t interrupt.””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then Detective Mills looked back at Emma.

“Did anything else happen before today?””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart broke.

“How long?””

Emma counted on her fingers.

“Lots of months.””

Detective Mills looked at me.

I looked away.

Because every time Emma spoke, I felt the weight of every day I wasn’t there.

After Detective Mills finished speaking with Emma, she asked to see the phone.

I handed it over.

She watched the videos.

Her expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Professionally.

But I could tell.

What she saw mattered.

“This footage was recorded inside your home?””

“Yes.””

“Who installed the camera?””

I looked at Rachel’s contact.

“A former nanny.””

Detective Mills nodded.

“We need to speak with her.””

“I can arrange that.””

She turned toward Vanessa.

“Mrs. Carter, we also need to ask about these documents.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“They are private family matters.””

“Not when they involve a child.””

Robert stepped forward.

“I represent Mrs. Carter.””

Detective Mills looked at him.

“Then you should advise your client to cooperate.””

Robert said nothing.

For the first time, he looked like someone who realized he had chosen the wrong side.

Later that evening, after Vanessa and Robert left with instructions from the officers, the house became quiet.

Too quiet.

Emma sat beside me on the couch.

“Is Mommy going away forever?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

She hugged her rabbit.

“Did I ruin everything?””

I felt tears in my eyes.

“No.””

I held her hand.

“You didn’t ruin anything.””

“But everyone is fighting because of me.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone is fighting because someone hurt you.””

She looked at me.

“But you didn’t know.””

That hurt.

Because she was right.

I didn’t know.

I was her father.

And I didn’t know.

My phone rang.

It was Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Rachel.””

“Daniel.””

Her voice sounded nervous.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“I didn’t show you everything.””

My body stiffened.

“What do you mean?””

“There was one more recording.””

I looked at Emma sleeping on the couch.

“What recording?””

Rachel took a breath.

“The one Vanessa never knew I saved.””

“Where is it?””

“I’m sending it now.””

My phone buzzed.

A file appeared.

The name was simple.

*Final Conversation.*

I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

May you like

And one sentence made my blood run cold.

“If Daniel won’t give up custody willingly, we’ll make him believe Emma is the problem.””
