Chapter 6: The File With My Daughter’s Name

Nobody moved.

The folder sat on the table between us.

Like a threat.

Like a warning.

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn’t crying anymore.

She looked confident.

That scared me more.

“Open it,” Robert said.

I didn’t touch it.

“Who are you?””

Robert adjusted his jacket.

“I’m a family attorney.””

“For Vanessa?””

He glanced at her.

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“So you came here with a lawyer after I found out my daughter was being mistreated?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I pointed at the folder.

“I understand perfectly.””

Robert stepped closer.

“Mr. Carter, emotions are high right now.””

“My daughter ate garbage.””

His face tightened.

“I’m aware of the situation.””

“Then why are you here?””

Robert looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because there is another side.””

I looked at Emma.

She was hiding behind me.

Another side.

That was what adults said when they wanted to explain away something cruel.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a report.

My eyes moved across the words.

Then stopped.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“From the agency.””

I looked at her.

“What agency?””

She didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

It was about Emma.

Her behavior.

Her emotions.

Her “adjustment problems.””

My anger grew.

“You had my daughter evaluated?””

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“I was trying to help.””

“You did this without telling me?””

“You never listened.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“You always saw Emma as perfect.””

The words were almost a whisper.

“But I saw what happened when nobody was watching.””

I felt my anger shift.

Not disappear.

Shift.

Because something didn’t add up.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at Emma.

“She lies.””

The room went silent.

Emma immediately shook her head.

“No.””

My heart broke seeing her defend herself.

Vanessa continued.

“She knows how to make people feel sorry for her.””

I stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No, Daniel. You need to hear this.””

She grabbed another paper.

“Read this.””

I took it.

It was a statement.

A child therapist’s name was at the bottom.

But something bothered me.

I looked closer.

The date.

The signature.

Then I noticed something.

The therapist’s name was familiar.

I had seen it before.

On another document.

A document Vanessa gave me when we bought our house.

I looked at Robert.

“Did this therapist actually meet Emma?””

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

I turned to Vanessa.

“When?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

I grabbed my phone.

I searched the therapist’s name.

The result appeared.

My stomach dropped.

Because the person listed wasn’t a child therapist.

She was a corporate consultant.

Not someone who worked with children.

I slowly looked up.

“This is fake.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

“This report.””

I held up the paper.

“This person doesn’t treat children.””

Robert stepped forward.

“That’s not possible.””

I threw the document onto the table.

“Then explain why you’re lying.””

Nobody spoke.

Emma squeezed my hand.

Then she whispered something.

Something I almost didn’t hear.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

“What?””

She pointed at Robert.

“He was there.””

My eyes moved to her.

“Where?””

“At Mommy’s house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What house?””

Emma’s voice trembled.

“The one she went to when you were at work.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“Emma, stop!””

The fear in her voice was different.

Real.

I turned toward her.

“You know what she’s talking about.””

Vanessa went silent.

I stepped closer.

“Where did you take my daughter?””

She looked at me.

Then at Robert.

And for the first time, Robert looked nervous.

Because Emma had just revealed something neither of them expected.

She remembered.

And before anyone could stop her, she pointed at the folder and said:

“Daddy, that’s not the worst thing they did.””

May you like

Her finger moved toward the last page.

“The worst thing is what they planned to do next.””
