Chapter 3: The Recording That Changed Everything
I replayed the audio.
I needed to be sure.
Maybe I heard wrong.
Maybe my anger was making me imagine things.
But then Tyler’s voice came through again.
“Mom, what if Dad finds out?””
The recording crackled.
Then Vanessa answered.
“He won’t.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Emma moved closer to me.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, you’re listening to something private.””
I ignored her.
The recording continued.
Tyler sounded nervous.
“I don’t like when Emma cries.””
Vanessa replied immediately.
“Then stop paying attention to it.””
My stomach dropped.
A child.
Her own son.
Sounded uncomfortable.
And Vanessa was teaching him to ignore it.
The recording continued.
“She’s making us look bad,” Vanessa said.
Tyler asked, “What are you going to do?””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa answered.
“I’ll handle it.””
I stopped the audio.
The silence afterward was worse.
I looked at my wife.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“It means nothing.””
“It means you were planning something.””
“No.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked away.
For the first time since I met her, Vanessa had no quick answer.
I picked up the phone.
“How many recordings are there?””
She stayed silent.
I scrolled.
There were more.
A lot more.
I opened another file.
This time it was video.
The camera angle showed Emma’s bedroom.
My daughter was sitting on her bed, crying.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
I felt my entire body go numb.
“You need to stop telling your father everything.””
Emma wiped her face.
“I didn’t tell.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You will.””
“I miss Daddy.””
Vanessa’s voice became colder.
“You always make everything about yourself.””
I shut the video off.
I couldn’t breathe.
Emma looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I turned away quickly because I didn’t want her to see me cry.
For months, I had been leaving her with someone who made her feel like a burden.
I thought I was protecting my family.
I wasn’t.
I was missing what was happening inside my own house.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed the phone.
I pulled it away.
“Don’t touch that.””
“You have no right.””
“My daughter has every right.””
“She’s my stepdaughter.””
The words hit me.
Not because they were new.
Because they explained everything.
Vanessa had never seen Emma as her daughter.
Only as an obstacle.
I looked toward the doorway.
Tyler and Madison were standing there.
Watching.
Tyler looked ashamed.
Madison looked uncomfortable.
“Did you know?”” I asked.
Neither answered.
“Did you know what she was doing?””
Tyler shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa snapped.
“Tyler, go upstairs.””
He didn’t move.
“Mom…”
Her face hardened.
“Now.””
Tyler slowly walked away.
But before he disappeared, he looked at Emma.
“I’m sorry.””
Emma didn’t respond.
I turned back to Vanessa.
“I’m calling my lawyer.””
Her expression changed.
“Daniel, don’t be dramatic.””
“I’m not.””
“You’re going to destroy our family over this?””
I stared at her.
“You destroyed it.””
She stepped closer.
“You think you can just take Emma away?””
I stayed silent.
Because something about the way she said it bothered me.
Not sadness.
Not fear of losing a child.
Fear of losing control.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
It was an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke softly.
“Is this Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I’m calling about your daughter Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“How do you know my daughter?””
There was a long pause.
Then the woman said:
“Because I was the person who installed the camera in her room.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face went completely white.
May you like
And the woman continued:
“Mr. Carter, you need to know what your wife did before you came home today.””
