Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Camera

I held the phone tighter against my ear.

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

Vanessa was standing across from me, watching my face carefully.

She knew.

She knew whoever was calling had something she didn’t want me to hear.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The woman on the phone took a slow breath.

“My name is Rachel. I used to work for your family.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know any Rachel.””

“You don’t. But your daughter does.””

I looked at Emma.

She was sitting on the edge of her bed, hugging her stuffed rabbit.

Her eyes were fixed on me.

“What did you do for my family?””

“I was your nanny for six months.””

My chest tightened.

A memory came back.

Six months earlier, Vanessa told me our nanny quit suddenly.

She said Rachel was unreliable.

She said Rachel left because she couldn’t handle the workload.

I believed her.

“What does this have to do with the camera?””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“I installed it because I was worried about Emma.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to this woman.””

I turned away from her.

“Why were you worried?””

There was a pause.

Then Rachel answered.

“Because I saw things that didn’t make sense.””

I walked toward the hallway, putting distance between Vanessa and the phone.

“What things?””

“She would change completely when you left.””

My jaw tightened.

“Explain.””

“When you were home, she acted like the perfect stepmother. She hugged Emma. She helped her with homework. She told you she loved her.””

Rachel paused.

“But when you drove away, everything changed.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

“Keep going.””

“She stopped calling Emma her daughter.””

My fingers went cold.

“What did she call her?””

Rachel hesitated.

“An expense.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

I looked at Emma.

She was watching me.

Trying to understand.

Trying to figure out if her own father was finally seeing what she had been trying to tell me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I tried.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

I remembered.

There had been a message from an unknown number.

I ignored it.

I thought it was spam.

“Rachel…”

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“You trusted your wife.””

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

“I’m sending you something,” Rachel said.

“What?””

“Proof.””

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

One video file.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer.

I opened it.

The video showed a grocery store parking lot.

Rachel was holding the camera.

Vanessa was standing near her car.

The date was from four months earlier.

Vanessa looked angry.

Rachel’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Why are you treating her like this?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Because someone has to be realistic.””

“Emma is five years old.””

“She’s not my responsibility.””

My stomach twisted.

Rachel stepped closer.

“She’s Daniel’s daughter.””

Vanessa laughed.

“And that’s exactly the problem.””

I stopped the video.

I couldn’t watch anymore.

Emma suddenly whispered.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you mad at me?””

Those words broke me.

Not because of what Vanessa did.

Because my daughter thought she caused the anger.

I dropped to my knees.

“No.””

I held her hands.

“Never.””

“But Mommy said…”

She stopped.

I gently squeezed her fingers.

“What did she say?””

Emma looked toward the doorway.

Then whispered:

“She said if I told you, you would send me away.””

My heart shattered.

I pulled her into my arms.

“I would never send you away.””

Behind me, Vanessa spoke.

“Daniel.””

I stood slowly.

“What?””

Her voice was different now.

No anger.

No confidence.

Just desperation.

“You’re going to believe a stranger over your wife?””

I looked at her.

“I’m believing my daughter.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Maybe.””

I held up the phone.

“But I’m done making the mistake of ignoring her.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward Emma.

Then back at me.

“There are things about your daughter you don’t know.””

My expression hardened.

“What things?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward the kitchen counter and picked up her purse.

“Where are you going?””

She looked at me.

“To get the proof you think you want.””

Then she stopped at the door.

“But when you see it, Daniel, you’re going to realize you weren’t protecting Emma.””

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa opened the door.

May you like

And before leaving, she said one sentence that made my entire body freeze.

“You should ask your daughter why she was really hiding that phone.””
