Chapter 12: The Inheritance Secret

I couldn’t move.

Vanessa’s words followed me long after she was gone.

Your daughter was never supposed to inherit anything.

I kept replaying it.

Over and over.

On the drive home, nobody spoke.

Even Detective Mills seemed to understand that something bigger had just surfaced.

When we arrived, my lawyer was already waiting.

His name was Michael.

He had worked with me for years.

He was the person I trusted with every important decision.

The moment he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“Did you know something about Emma’s inheritance?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

And that scared me.

“Daniel…”

“Answer me.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

Michael sighed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He sat down slowly.

“From a mistake your late wife made.””

I froze.

“My late wife?””

Emma’s mother.

The woman I lost when Emma was only two.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Michael opened his briefcase.

“I should have told you earlier.””

He pulled out a document.

“This is Emma’s trust agreement.””

I looked at it.

“Her mother created this before she passed.””

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My eyes stopped.

There was a clause.

A condition.

“What is this?””

Michael looked serious.

“Your daughter’s inheritance was protected.””

“Protected from who?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Vanessa.””

Michael nodded.

“She could never access it.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He took a breath.

“Because Emma’s mother suspected someone would try.””

My stomach tightened.

“Try what?””

“To control Emma.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the document again.

“How much?””

Michael hesitated.

“How much money?””

He finally answered.

“Several million dollars.””

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The fake reports.

The custody plan.

The cruelty.

Vanessa didn’t just hate Emma.

She saw her as a locked door.

A door protecting something she wanted.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One picture.

A document.

A signature.

My signature.

My blood ran cold.

Because underneath the picture was a message:

*You need to know what your wife made you sign two years ago.*

I looked at Michael.

“What is this?””

He took the phone.

His face changed.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

He zoomed in.

Then whispered:

“This isn’t possible.””

I stood.

“Tell me.””

He looked at me.

“Someone altered your estate documents.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

Michael stared at the signature.

Then at me.

“The person who benefited.””

I waited.

May you like

His answer came quietly.

“Your brother.””
