Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

I didn't remember leaving the library.

I only remembered driving.

Fast.

Too fast.

Nathaniel sat beside me, telling me to slow down.

I couldn't hear him.

My mind was trapped on one image.

My mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Adrian.

The man who had destroyed my marriage.

The man who had lied to me for years.

The man who was somehow connected to the night my father died.

When we reached Adrian's temporary residence, security stopped us.

I stepped out before they could speak.

“Where is he?””

The guard hesitated.

“He's inside.””

I walked past him.

Adrian was standing near the window.

No suit.

No expensive watch.

No performance.

Just a broken man staring at the city.

He turned.

“You know.””

I stopped.

“What did you do?””

His face tightened.

“Evelyn—”

“Don't.””

I held up my phone.

The photograph.

His eyes dropped.

And that was enough.

“You know her.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

My chest hurt.

“How?””

He didn't answer.

“How do you know my mother?””

“Because she found me.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew I was being used.””

I stepped closer.

“You're still protecting yourself.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

For once, his eyes were honest.

“She saved me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My mother saved you?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Adrian sat down.

And for the first time, he looked afraid of the truth.

“From your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Your father wasn't the man you thought he was.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get to rewrite my family because you got caught.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

He looked down.

“Your father discovered my relationship with Bellweather.””

“You had one?””

“I worked for them.””

The confession hit.

“How long?””

“Before I met you.””

My stomach turned.

“So my father was right.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

Adrian didn't fight it.

“I was sent to get close to Hawthorne Capital.””

My voice became quiet.

“To me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you?””

He looked up.

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I almost hated that part of me wanted to believe him.

Almost.

“Then why betray me?””

“Because by the time I realized what Bellweather wanted, it was too late.””

“What did they want?””

“Your shares.””

I stared at him.

“And my father?””

Adrian looked away.

“Your father found out.””

“Then what happened?””

He didn't answer.

“Adrian.””

His hands tightened.

“Your father confronted the people behind Bellweather.””

“Who?””

“Someone inside your family.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at me.

And whispered:

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“She wasn't working alone.””

“Stop.””

“She helped create the structure that allowed Bellweather to control assets.””

“Stop.””

“She came back because she knew everything was collapsing.””

I shook my head.

“You're lying.””

“I wish I was.””

Nathaniel entered behind me.

“Evelyn.””

I turned.

He held a file.

His face looked devastated.

“What?””

He opened it.

“Hospital records.””

I stared.

“What hospital?””

“Hawthorne Memorial.””

My blood ran cold.

Nathaniel looked at Adrian.

“Your father wasn't the only person admitted that night.””

I couldn't breathe.

“What are you saying?””

Nathaniel handed me the file.

Inside was an emergency admission record.

Twenty years ago.

Same date as my mother's supposed death.

Same hospital.

Same night.

The patient name was partially covered.

But I could see enough.

The first name.

The last name.

My hands shook.

Because it wasn't my mother.

It wasn't my father.

It was someone else.

Someone whose existence had been erased.

Nathaniel whispered:

“Evelyn, your family has been hiding a third person all these years.””

I looked at the name.

And everything I believed shattered.

Because the person who was admitted that night…

May you like

was listed as:

*Daniel Hawthorne.*
