Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Empire
I didn't sleep.
I couldn't.
The walls of my penthouse felt different that night.
Not because they had changed.
Because I finally understood that everything around me had been built on secrets.
The expensive paintings.
The family photographs.
The awards Adrian displayed like trophies.
Every piece of my life suddenly felt like evidence in a case I didn't know I was part of.
At 5:12 a.m., Nathaniel knocked on my office door.
“You should rest.””
I didn't turn around.
“Did my father know?””
Nathaniel stayed quiet.
That was the answer.
I looked out over the city.
The same city that had watched Adrian destroy me hours earlier.
“Everyone knew something except me.””
“That isn't true.””
“Then tell me what is.””
Nathaniel walked closer.
“Your father loved you.””
I laughed quietly.
“People keep saying that.””
“He did.””
“Then why did he leave me a company full of enemies?””
Nathaniel placed a file on my desk.
“Because he didn't think he was leaving you enemies.””
I opened it.
Inside were handwritten notes.
My father's handwriting.
I knew it instantly.
My fingers shook.
The first page had only one sentence.
*Evelyn, if you are reading this, then someone has forced you to see what I tried to hide.*
I stopped.
The room became silent.
I kept reading.
*I wanted you to have a normal life. I wanted you to choose love without wondering whether someone wanted your name, your money, or your power.*
My vision blurred.
Nathaniel looked away.
He had probably read it before.
The next line made my chest tighten.
*But if Adrian Vale is the reason you found this letter, trust nobody who says they acted alone.*
I looked up.
“Why didn't you show me this before?””
Nathaniel swallowed.
“Because your father instructed me not to unless certain conditions were met.””
“What conditions?””
He looked at the clock.
“The first was the removal of Adrian Vale as CEO.””
I turned the page.
The second condition was underlined.
*If Adrian attempts to leave the country, release everything.*
My heart stopped.
“He knew.””
Nathaniel nodded.
“Your father suspected Adrian would run.””
“Three years ago?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Three years.
My father knew.
And still, I married Adrian.
A sound came from my phone.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Your father died believing Adrian would eventually choose you over power. He was wrong.*
I stared at the screen.
Nathaniel noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read it.
Then immediately called his security team.
“Where are you going?”” I asked.
“To make sure whoever sent that message doesn't get close to you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Evelyn—”
“I need answers.””
“You don't know who you're dealing with.””
I looked at him.
“That makes two of us.””
An hour later, I sat across from William Blackwood.
Not in an office.
Not in a mansion.
In a quiet private library hidden behind an old downtown building.
No cameras.
No assistants.
No security guards visible.
Which somehow made it more intimidating.
William Blackwood looked nothing like I expected.
No arrogance.
No flashy watch.
No expensive suit trying to announce his wealth.
Just a man in his seventies with tired eyes.
The eyes of someone who had carried a secret too long.
“You look like your father.””
I hated that sentence.
Everyone said it after he died.
“I didn't come here for compliments.””
A small smile appeared.
“Good.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“I didn't invite you here to comfort you.””
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
My father.
William.
Daniel Hawthorne.
Thomas.
And Adrian.
Again.
But this time, Adrian wasn't smiling.
He looked angry.
“When was this?””
“The year before you met him.””
I looked up.
“Why was Adrian with my father?””
William folded his hands.
“Because your father believed Adrian could be saved.””
I frowned.
“Saved?””
“Your husband wasn't always the man you saw last night.””
I almost laughed.
“He married me for control.””
“Yes.””
“He stole from me.””
“Yes.””
“He betrayed my family.””
“Yes.””
His honesty surprised me.
“Then why are you defending him?””
“I'm not.””
William looked at the photograph.
“I'm explaining him.””
I hated that I wanted to hear more.
“What happened?””
“Your father discovered Adrian was being used.””
“By who?””
William didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“By someone much closer than you realize.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Before he could answer, the library door opened.
Nathaniel walked in.
His face was pale.
“Evelyn.””
I stood.
“What happened?””
He looked at William.
Then at me.
“The court approved the asset freeze.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Already?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Nathaniel handed me a document.
The signature at the bottom made my blood run cold.
Because I knew it.
I had seen it hundreds of times.
My own signature.
“This is impossible.””
Nathaniel whispered:
“Evelyn…”
I looked closer.
The document had been filed two days before the banquet.
Before Adrian humiliated me.
Before the board meeting.
Before the phone call.

Someone had planned everything.
And someone had used my name to do it.
