Chapter 5: The Woman Who Had My Mother’s Necklace
Nobody spoke.
The woman stood beneath the ballroom lights, completely calm.
She looked to be in her early forties.
Elegant.
Confident.
Dangerously familiar.
The necklace around her throat caught every beam of light.
My mother's necklace.
The one my father kept locked away after her funeral.
The one he told me would never leave our family.
I felt my knees weaken.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
“Adrian didn't tell you?””
My husband looked away.
That was all I needed.
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Ma'am, identify yourself.””
She smiled slightly.
“I'm Rebecca Lane.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Thomas whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas stared at the necklace.
“That's impossible.””
Rebecca touched the pendant.
“Your brother thought the same thing.””
My heart stopped.
“My brother?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father had a sister.””
I frowned.
“My father was an only child.””
“That is what you were told.””
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Victoria looked furious.
“Thomas, don't.””
Rebecca laughed quietly.
“Still protecting the people who lied to you?””
I turned toward Adrian.
“What is happening?””
He didn't answer.
“Adrian.””
His jaw tightened.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
His silence returned.
“When you had already taken everything?””
He looked hurt.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“By humiliating me?””
“No.””
“By stealing from my father?””
“No.””
“By leaving the country tonight?””
He had no answer.
Rebecca walked closer.
“Evelyn, your father didn't die knowing everything.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“He discovered Adrian's plan.””
My eyes moved to Adrian.
“What plan?””
Rebecca looked directly at him.
“The plan to control Hawthorne assets by marrying the only person who could legally transfer them.””
A wave of disgust moved through me.
Guests gasped.
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“That isn't true.””
Rebecca didn't even look at him.
“Then why did you create a fake agreement before your wedding?””
Silence.
Nathaniel slowly turned toward Adrian.
“You created the agreement before they married?””
Adrian's face changed.
Nathaniel understood.
“You didn't modify an existing document.””
He looked horrified.
“You created a fraudulent one from the beginning.””
Victoria stood.
“This is ridiculous.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“You knew too.””
Victoria's expression froze.
“No.””
“You signed the witness page.””
The room became silent.
Victoria looked at Adrian.
Not me.
Him.
And I finally saw it.
The fear wasn't about losing money.
It was about being exposed.
“You both knew.””
My voice was barely audible.
Victoria sat down.
Adrian stepped toward me.
“Evelyn, please.””
I moved away.
“Don't.””
The word hurt him.
Good.
For the first time, I wanted him to feel something.
Anything.
Nathaniel took the document from Rebecca.
“Where did you get this?””
“My brother gave it to me.””
Thomas stared.
“Your brother?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Yes.””
A horrible realization crossed Thomas's face.
“Daniel.””
She nodded.
Daniel Hawthorne.
My father's secret brother.
A man I had never heard of.
A man who apparently knew everything.
“Where is he?”” I asked.
Rebecca's expression softened.
“He tried to expose Adrian two years ago.””
“What happened?””
She looked at Adrian.
“He disappeared.””
The ballroom exploded.
“No.””
“I don't believe this.””
“Is this a crime?””
Adrian shouted over them.
“Enough!””
Everyone stopped.
He looked around.
His perfect image was gone.
No CEO.
No billionaire.
Just a man cornered.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
I stared at him.
“I know exactly what I'm doing.””
“No, you don't.””
His voice lowered.
“You think removing me fixes everything?””
“Yes.””
He shook his head.
“Then you don't know what you inherited.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled bitterly.
“There is a reason your father never gave you full control.””
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
But Adrian continued.
“He knew what would happen if you found out.””
My heart pounded.
“Found out what?””
Adrian looked at Rebecca.
Then at Thomas.
Then back at me.
“Your father didn't build Hawthorne Capital alone.””
The lights above us flickered.
Nobody moved.
Adrian whispered:
“And the person who helped him build it is the same person who has been secretly controlling Vale Meridian for years.””
Rebecca's face changed.
Because she knew exactly who he meant.
Adrian pointed toward the entrance.
“Ask your attorney who really owns the remaining thirty-two percent.””
Nathaniel went completely still.
And that was when I realized.
The battle for my company had never been between Adrian and me.
May you like
Someone else had been moving every piece.
And they were still watching.
