Chapter 12: The Man Who Survived
The old Hawthorne estate looked smaller than I remembered.
Maybe because I was no longer the little girl who believed every adult around her was honest.
Rain hit the windshield as we pulled up.
Nathaniel wanted security.
I refused.
Adrian wanted to come.
I almost refused.
But I needed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because he knew things I didn't.
The front door was open.
That was worse than if it had been locked.
Inside, the house smelled like dust and old memories.
The family portraits still hung on the walls.
My childhood.
My parents.
A life that no longer felt real.
“Daniel!””
My voice echoed.
No answer.
We walked deeper.
Then we heard something.
A chair moving.
A voice.
“Evelyn.””
I froze.
The man stepped out from the shadows.
Daniel Hawthorne.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My eyes filled instantly.
“You're alive.””
He nodded.
“I have been.””
“Why didn't you come back?””
Pain crossed his face.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I looked at Adrian.
Then back at Daniel.
“My father?””
“He knew what would happen if I returned.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at the walls.
“This.””
The silence.
The fear.
The lies.
“I don't understand.””
Daniel walked toward the fireplace.
“Your father discovered Bellweather was never about money.””
“Then what was it about?””
“Control.””
“Of what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“You.””
The answer felt impossible.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He opened an old drawer.
Inside was a folder.
“I found this the night everything changed.””
He handed it to me.
Inside were documents.
Adoption records.
Transfer agreements.
Private trust papers.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel's face was full of sadness.
“The reason everyone has been fighting over you.””
I flipped through the pages.
Then I saw it.
A legal document.
My father's signature.
My mother's signature.
And another name.
A name I had never seen.
“What is this?””
Daniel whispered:
“Your parents didn't create Hawthorne Capital for you.””
I stared at him.
“They created it because they knew one day you'd need protection.””
“From who?””
Daniel looked toward Adrian.
Then away.
“From your own blood.””
The room went silent.
Adrian stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You know exactly what I'm saying.””
Adrian's face changed.
“No.””
Daniel turned back to me.
“Your mother wasn't the only one who made a deal with Bellweather.””
My fingers tightened around the papers.
“Who else?””
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Because the front door suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A voice came from the hallway.
“You should have stayed gone, Daniel.””
My blood froze.
Victoria Vale stepped into the room.
But she wasn't alone.
Standing beside her was a man holding a file.
A man I recognized.
William Blackwood.
Except his face wasn't calm anymore.
It was angry.
Victoria smiled.
“Evelyn, there is something you need to know before you decide who the villain is.””
I stared at them.
“What?””
She looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
“The person who betrayed your family first…”
May you like
She paused.
“…was your father.””
