Chapter 4: The Call From the Past
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
The ballroom lights reflected off the screen, making the hospital's name glow brighter than anything else in the room.
Hawthorne Memorial Medical Center.
The place where my father had spent his final weeks.
The place where Adrian had promised me, with tears in his eyes, that he would protect everything my family built.
My hand trembled as I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through.
“Is this Evelyn Hawthorne?””
“Yes.””
“This is Dr. Sarah Whitmore from Hawthorne Memorial. I'm calling regarding an urgent matter involving your father's estate records.””
My eyes immediately found Adrian.
His face had changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
He knew.
“Why are you calling me tonight?””
There was a pause.
A careful pause.
“The hospital's legal department discovered a discrepancy during an audit.””
Nathaniel stepped closer.
“What discrepancy?””
The doctor heard him.
“Who is this?””
“Nathaniel Ross, Ms. Hawthorne's attorney.””
Another pause.
“Mr. Ross, this concerns documents that appear to have been modified after Mr. Hawthorne's death.””
My blood went cold.
My father's death had happened three years ago.
Before Adrian became CEO.
Before Celeste.
Before tonight.
“What documents?”” I asked.
The ballroom had gone silent again.
Even the guests who had been pretending not to listen were frozen.
Dr. Whitmore lowered her voice.
“Your father's medical trust agreement.””
I stopped breathing.
My father had created the Hawthorne Medical Foundation after my mother died.
It funded research.
Paid for treatments.
Protected hospitals in smaller communities.
It was his legacy.
“What about it?””
“The beneficiary instructions were changed.””
I looked at Adrian.
His eyes dropped.
That was enough.
I didn't need anyone to explain.
“Changed to what?””
Dr. Whitmore hesitated.
“I'm not authorized to disclose the full details over the phone.””
Nathaniel spoke firmly.
“Doctor, this is a legal emergency. You called her. You know what is at stake.””
A long silence followed.
Then she answered.
“The amended documents redirected control of several foundation assets to a private investment entity.””
“Which one?”” Nathaniel asked.
The doctor's voice became quieter.
“Bellweather Holdings.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Victoria whispered, “No.””
I looked at Adrian.
“You didn't just take my company.””
He didn't respond.
“You took my father's legacy.””
Adrian finally spoke.
“You don't understand what happened.””
I laughed softly.
It wasn't because anything was funny.
It was because I suddenly understood how many lies I had lived inside.
“Then explain.””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to keep everything together.””
“You changed my father's documents.””
“I saved those assets.””
“You stole them.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No, Evelyn. I moved them because people were trying to destroy Vale Meridian.””
“Who?””
He looked at Thomas.
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Don't you dare.””
Adrian ignored him.
“You think your uncle is the hero?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“I warned you.””
“About what?”” I demanded.
Nobody answered.
That scared me more.
Nathaniel looked at Thomas.
“It's time.””
Thomas stared at Adrian.
“You wanted to play this publicly.””
He removed a small envelope from inside his jacket.
“I guess everyone deserves to know why.””
Adrian's face went pale.
“Don't.””
Thomas opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
It was my father.
Standing beside Thomas.
And another man.
A younger Adrian.
My stomach tightened.
“When was this taken?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Six years ago.””
I stared at Adrian.
Six years ago.
Before our wedding.
Before he told me he barely knew my family.
“You knew my father?””
Adrian didn't answer.
“Adrian.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Thomas answered.
“Because your husband didn't enter your life by accident.””
The words hit harder than the champagne glass breaking.
I looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“Evelyn, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“Not this time.””
Thomas pointed at the photograph.
“Your father discovered something about Adrian before you met him.””
“What?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Thomas, stop.””
Nathaniel moved between them.
“Let her hear.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father found evidence that Adrian had been moving company assets through shell accounts.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
“But Adrian wasn't CEO then.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“He was trying to become CEO.””
Everything suddenly connected.
The perfect timing.
The sudden romance.
The way Adrian always knew exactly what to say.
The way he convinced me he loved me before he ever asked about my family's business.
I looked at my husband.
“Did you marry me because of my shares?””
His silence answered.
For the first time all night, Adrian looked ashamed.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“I loved you.””
I shook my head.
“Which part?””
He didn't understand.
“Evelyn—”
“The part where I was your wife?””
I stepped closer.
“Or the part where I controlled sixty-eight percent of the company you wanted?””
No answer.
Nathaniel's phone buzzed again.
He checked it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He slowly turned the phone around.
A breaking news alert filled the screen.
*VALE MERIDIAN CEO ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT AS BOARD ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY ACTION*
But below the headline was another line.
One that made my heart stop.
*NEW EVIDENCE LINKS CEO TO HAWTHORNE FAMILY ESTATE FRAUD.*
Adrian saw it.
And suddenly whispered:
“She found it.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
His eyes moved toward the ballroom entrance.
The doors opened.
A woman walked inside.
And everyone turned.
Because I recognized her.
She was wearing the same necklace my father had buried with my mother.
May you like
Except my mother was dead.
And that necklace was supposed to be gone forever.
