Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Buried

The words hung in the air.

The person who betrayed your family first was your father.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Adrian.

Not even Daniel.

Then I laughed.

A quiet, broken laugh.

“That's your defense?””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“You think I'm lying.””

“I think you have spent years lying.””

She stepped forward.

“You only know the version of your father he wanted you to know.””

Daniel's face darkened.

“Don't do this.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You were always too loyal.””

“And you were always too willing to destroy people to protect yourself.””

William Blackwood remained silent beside her.

That bothered me.

A man who had controlled companies and moved billions of dollars didn't look surprised.

He looked like someone watching a plan finally reach its final stage.

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

William didn't deny it.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“You knew everything?””

“I knew enough.””

“Enough to let my husband destroy me?””

William's eyes moved to Adrian.

“Adrian made his own choices.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Now you say that?””

Everyone turned.

He looked at William with disgust.

“You recruited me.””

William's face stayed calm.

“You volunteered.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You found me when I was desperate. You told me Hawthorne Capital was vulnerable. You told me Evelyn was the key.””

My heart sank.

There it was.

The confession I had been waiting for.

But it wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

Because everyone had been guilty.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

Daniel moved toward me.

“Evelyn, listen to me.””

I looked at him.

“Did my father betray my family?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation broke me.

“Tell me.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

My throat tightened.

“How?””

Daniel walked toward the fireplace.

“Your father built Hawthorne Capital with one goal.””

“To protect me?””

“To protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Then why are you saying he betrayed us?””

“Because protection became control.””

The words sounded familiar.

My father's letter.

Protection without truth.

Another form of control.

Daniel continued.

“Your father discovered that Bellweather and Blackwood were trying to take control of Hawthorne assets. But instead of trusting you with the truth, he created secret agreements.””

“To protect me.””

“Yes.””

“Without my knowledge.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents again.

My father's signature.

My mother's.

My own name.

“I was never supposed to know.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel's voice softened.

“Because he believed you were too kind.””

I almost hated that answer.

“Kind?””

“He thought you would forgive everyone.””

I looked around the room.

Adrian.

Victoria.

William.

Daniel.

Everyone had made choices for me.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

I wiped my eyes.

“My entire life, people have been protecting me from the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

“I didn't need protection.””

My voice grew stronger.

“I needed honesty.””

Then Victoria laughed.

Not loudly.

Not nervously.

Almost sadly.

“You still don't understand.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Your father wasn't afraid you would forgive people.””

A pause.

“He was afraid you would become exactly like him.””

The words hit differently.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at William.

“Tell her.””

William finally stepped forward.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

“Your father created a final trust.””

Nathaniel, who had been silent near the doorway, immediately reacted.

“What trust?””

William looked at him.

“One that activates only if all major shareholders attempt to remove control from Evelyn.””

I frowned.

“What?””

William handed me another document.

I read the title.

*HAWTHORNE LEGACY SUCCESSION AGREEMENT*

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Daniel answered.

“Your father knew everyone would eventually fight over the company.””

“So he created a backup plan.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the final page.

There was a condition.

A condition that made everyone silent.

“What?””

Adrian looked at the paper.

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“You can't activate that.””

“Why?””

Because Nathaniel had already read it.

And he whispered:

“Because if Evelyn activates this clause…”

I waited.

“…every person who participated in the unauthorized transfer of Hawthorne assets loses ownership rights immediately.””

The room froze.

Victoria stepped back.

William's expression finally changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

I looked at all of them.

The people who had played with my life.

The people who thought I was just a woman they could control.

And for the first time, I understood.

May you like

My father hadn't left me a company.

He had left me a weapon.
