Chapter 14: The Final Move

The next morning, the emergency board meeting was held at Vale Meridian headquarters.

The same building where Adrian had once walked like a king.

Now, employees avoided eye contact.

Executives whispered in hallways.

The man who had humiliated me in front of four hundred people was no longer sitting at the head of the table.

I was.

The board members entered one by one.

Some looked nervous.

Some looked angry.

Some looked ashamed.

Adrian arrived last.

Without security.

Without assistants.

Without the confidence he had carried for years.

He stopped at the door.

For a second, we just looked at each other.

Then he said quietly:

“I never wanted this.””

I didn't answer.

He walked to the opposite side of the table.

“You believe that?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised him.

I opened the meeting.

“Let's begin.””

Nathaniel presented the evidence.

Bellweather accounts.

The forged agreements.

The unauthorized transfers.

The hidden contracts.

Every lie Adrian had buried.

Every lie Victoria had protected.

Every move William had calculated.

The room watched silently.

Then one board member asked:

“Ms. Hawthorne, what do you intend to do?””

I looked around.

Months ago, I would have looked for someone else's advice.

Not anymore.

“I intend to restore control.””

The board member nodded.

“And the CEO position?””

Everyone looked at Adrian.

He didn't move.

I could have destroyed him.

A part of me wanted to.

But then I remembered my father's words.

Protection without truth.

Control without trust.

I didn't want to become another person who decided everyone else's fate.

“Adrian Vale will remain under investigation.””

The room reacted.

Adrian looked surprised.

“But he will not be CEO.””

He nodded slowly.

Nathaniel continued.

“There is also the matter of criminal referrals.””

Victoria, sitting at the back of the room, finally spoke.

“You would send your own family to prison?””

I looked at her.

“You stopped being my family when you helped destroy my life.””

She looked away.

William stood.

“I assume you think you've won.””

I turned.

“No.””

That surprised him.

“I think the truth finally started.””

William smiled faintly.

“You still don't understand.””

I stared at him.

“Understand what?””

He walked closer.

“Your father wasn't fighting us.””

“Then who was he fighting?””

William looked toward Adrian.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“Someone above all of us.””

The room went silent.

Nathaniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

William reached into his coat.

He removed a small envelope.

“This arrived this morning.””

I didn't touch it.

“From who?””

William placed it on the table.

The name written across the front made Daniel go pale.

Not William.

Not Bellweather.

Not Blackwood.

A name I had never expected.

My mother's.

I opened it.

Inside was one page.

Only one sentence.

*Evelyn, if you are reading this, then your father failed to tell you the truth about why I disappeared.*

My hands shook.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Your mother, Amelia Hawthorne.*

Alive.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

A voice I had spent twenty years believing I would never hear.

“Evelyn?””

I couldn't breathe.

“Mom?””

A pause.

Then:

“I need you to know something before they find you.””

My grip tightened.

“Who?””

Her voice trembled.

“Your father didn't die because of Bellweather.””

I stood.

“Then why did he die?””

The line went silent.

Then she whispered:

“Because he found out I had another child.””

The room disappeared.

Another child.

My mother's words continued.

“And that child has been standing beside you the entire time.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Everyone was staring.

Adrian looked terrified.

Daniel looked devastated.

Nathaniel whispered:

“Evelyn…”

I looked around the room.

“Who is my sibling?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Until Adrian did.

And his answer destroyed everything.
