Chapter 1: The Toast

“The most expensive mistake I ever made.””

My husband said those words into a microphone while looking directly at me.

Four hundred people heard him.

For three seconds, the ballroom went so quiet I could hear the soft hiss of the champagne fountain beside the stage.

Then someone laughed.

It spread from one table to another.

Not because the joke was funny.

Because when billionaire CEO Adrian Vale laughed at someone, everyone else knew they were supposed to laugh too.

Especially when that someone was his wife.

Me.

I sat at Table One beneath a crystal chandelier, wearing a black silk gown and the diamond earrings my grandmother had left me.

Adrian stood onstage with one hand wrapped around a champagne glass.

His other arm was around Celeste Monroe.

His mistress.

She wore silver.

Of course she did.

The silver Bentley she'd arrived in was technically mine.

Adrian raised his glass.

“To correcting expensive mistakes.””

More laughter.

Celeste lowered her eyes with a rehearsed little smile.

Then Adrian turned her face toward his and kissed her.

Not a quick kiss.

Not something anyone could misunderstand.

He kissed her slowly while cameras flashed.

My fingers remained wrapped around my water glass.

Across the table, Adrian's mother, Victoria, leaned toward me.

“Don't make a scene, Evelyn.””

I looked at her.

Victoria's diamond necklace glittered under the ballroom lights.

I'd paid the insurance premium on it six weeks earlier.

“I'm not making one.””

“Good.”” She dabbed the corner of her mouth with a napkin.

“Then leave quietly.””

Adrian's younger brother, Marcus, chuckled.

“Honestly, Evie, you had to know this was coming.””

My gaze dropped briefly to his wrist.

A Patek Philippe.

Purchased through the Hawthorne family office.

My family office.

I almost smiled.

Marcus mistook my silence for humiliation.

“Don't worry,” he added.

“I'm sure Adrian will be generous in the divorce.””

Onstage, Adrian tapped the microphone.

“And since tonight is about the future of Vale Meridian…”

The giant screen behind him changed.

CELESTE MONROE VICE PRESIDENT OF STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT

Applause erupted.

Celeste covered her mouth dramatically.

“Oh, Adrian.””

“You earned it,” he said.

I finally laughed.

Just once.

Quietly.

Victoria's head snapped toward me.

“What is funny?””

“Nothing.””

“Then control yourself.””

Adrian noticed.

Even from the stage.

His expression tightened.

He descended the steps and crossed the ballroom toward me while Celeste followed.

Guests turned in their chairs.

Adrian stopped beside my table.

“Something amusing, Evelyn?””

“No.””

“Then why are you laughing?””

I looked up at him.

“Because you really think everything in this room belongs to you.””

His jaw hardened.

Celeste touched his arm.

“Adrian, don't. She's obviously upset.””

I looked at her.

“Congratulations on the promotion.””

She blinked.

“Thank you.””

“You should enjoy the Bentley too.””

Her smile returned.

“I intend to.””

“I'd hurry.””

Adrian leaned closer.

“You're embarrassing yourself.””

“No, Adrian.””

I placed my napkin beside my plate.

“You've confused me with you.””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Then Victoria hissed, “Leave.””

I stood.

A dozen phones immediately lifted.

People expected tears.

Maybe screaming.

Maybe a slap.

Instead, I reached into my clutch and pulled out my phone.

Adrian laughed.

“Calling your therapist?””

“Lawyer.””

The amusement around us grew louder.

I tapped one contact.

Nathaniel Ross answered on the second ring.

“Evelyn?””

“Execute the voting consent.””

Silence.

Not from the ballroom.

From Nathaniel.

Then his voice changed.

“You're certain?””

I watched Adrian.

Completely.

“Terminate the CEO effective immediately.””

Adrian stopped smiling.

I continued.

“Revoke all executive purchasing authority. Freeze the discretionary accounts. And Nathaniel?””

“Yes?””

“Repossess every vehicle titled to Hawthorne Capital.””

Celeste's face drained.

Marcus burst out laughing.

Victoria stared at me as though I'd finally lost my mind.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You're done.””

I lowered the phone.

“Actually, you are.””

He grabbed my wrist.

“You can't fire me.””

The cameras caught everything.

I looked down at his hand until he released me.

Then I met his eyes.

“No,” I said quietly.

“But the person who owns sixty-eight percent of the voting shares can.””

Nobody laughed.

Adrian's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Behind him, Celeste whispered, “Sixty-eight percent?””

His phone buzzed.

Then Marcus's.

Then Victoria's.

Across the ballroom, members of Vale Meridian's board began checking their phones.

Adrian looked at his screen.

His face went white.

*EMERGENCY BOARD ACTION — CEO TERMINATION*

He looked at me.

“What did you do?””

I slipped my phone into my clutch.

“What you should've done before humiliating me.””

“What?””

“Read the documents you signed.””

Then the ballroom doors opened.

May you like

Nathaniel Ross walked inside carrying a black leather folder.

And beside him was the one person Adrian had spent three years making sure I never met.
