Chapter 15: The Last Secret
“No.””
Adrian's voice was barely audible.
Everyone turned toward him.
I stared.
“What did you say?””
He looked like a man watching the past return to punish him.
“Evelyn…”
“Who is my sibling?””
He closed his eyes.
“I didn't know they were your sibling.””
My heart stopped.
“But you know who it is.””
Silence.
That was enough.
I walked toward him.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
Then Adrian whispered:
“Celeste.””
The room exploded.
“No.””
“No way.””
Victoria covered her mouth.
William stepped back.
I couldn't move.
Celeste.
The woman who stood beside my husband.
The woman who kissed him onstage.
The woman who was announced as Vice President.
My half-sister.
“No.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Her mother was Amelia.””
My knees weakened.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
Daniel answered.
“Because your father discovered the truth too late.””
“What truth?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Celeste wasn't trying to take your company.””
A pause.
“She was trying to find out what happened to her own father.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
“No.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“Your mother's first husband.””
The room went silent.
Everything changed.
Every betrayal.
Every lie.
Every person I thought I understood.
Celeste wasn't just Adrian's mistress.
She wasn't just an enemy.
She was someone who had been manipulated too.
Nathaniel looked at the documents.
“Then who created Bellweather?””
Nobody answered.
Until my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Celeste.
*I know you hate me. I deserve that. But I found the person who killed your father.*
A location followed.
Then another message.
*Come alone.*
I looked at Adrian.
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because if she's telling the truth, it's a trap.””
I looked at him.
“You're worried about me?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
I believed him.
Not because he deserved forgiveness.
Because for the first time, he wasn't trying to gain anything.
I turned to Nathaniel.
“Find her location.””
He nodded.
But William spoke.
“Don't.””
Everyone looked at him.
He looked exhausted.
“Because I already know what she found.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
William looked at the floor.
“The person who killed your father.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Who?””
William slowly lifted his eyes.
And for the first time, the most powerful man in the room looked afraid.
“Your father wasn't murdered by a stranger.””
I waited.
“He was betrayed by someone he trusted.””
“Who?””
William whispered:
“The person who raised you.””
My blood turned cold.
“No.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Adrian looked away.
Nathaniel stopped breathing.
And then my phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID wasn't unknown.
It was a name.
A name I hadn't seen in twenty years.
*Amelia Hawthorne.*
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother's voice came through.
“Evelyn.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Mom…”
A long silence.
Then she said:
“I need you to know the truth.””
My eyes filled.
“What truth?””
Her voice cracked.
“The night your father died…”
A pause.
“…I wasn't the one who betrayed him.””
I held my breath.
“Then who was?””
My mother's answer came softly.
And it changed everything.
“It was the person who spent your entire life pretending to protect you.””
The line went dead.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Daniel.
At Adrian.
At Victoria.
At William.
And I finally understood.
The enemy I had been searching for was never outside my family.
It had been sitting at my table.
May you like
Calling me daughter.
And waiting for the right moment to take everything.
