Chapter 9: The Message From Beyond
I stared at the phone screen.
The message was impossible.
Rachel.
My wife.
The woman who had been gone for three years.
The woman whose voice I would never hear again.
Her name appeared nowhere.
Just a number.
But Vanessa recognized it.
“How?”” I asked.
Vanessa sat down.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She covered her face.
“I received a message from this number before.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“Two days after Rachel died.””
I couldn’t speak.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought someone was trying to scare me.””
I stared.
“Someone pretending to be Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you afraid now?””
Vanessa looked at the phone.
“Because they know things only Rachel would know.””
I felt a chill.
“What things?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“The first message said…”
Her voice shook.
“‘I know what you and Daniel did.’”
The room felt smaller.
I sat across from her.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?””
She laughed sadly.
“Because I was guilty too.””
I waited.
She looked at me.
“I helped Daniel.””
My jaw tightened.
“With what?””
“Covering things up.””
The honesty was almost worse.
“What exactly did you cover up?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“The night Rachel died.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Tell me.””
“She was supposed to leave the hospital.””
“What?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She was getting worse, but she wasn’t supposed to die that night.””
I gripped the chair.
“What happened?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel came to the hospital.””
“Why?””
“He said Rachel needed paperwork signed.””
My stomach dropped.
“Financial paperwork?””
“Yes.””
“Then?””
“Rachel refused.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew he was trying to access Lily’s trust.””
I closed my eyes.
Rachel knew.
She knew all along.
“What happened next?””
Vanessa whispered:
“They argued.””
“With Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“And you were there?””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“You were there when my wife died?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I heard Rachel scream.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you do?””
“I froze.””
“You did nothing?””
“I was scared.””
“Of Daniel?””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
Because part of me wanted to understand.
But another part remembered Lily crying in that shoe store.
Fear explained actions.
It didn’t excuse them.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a photo.
I opened it.
My entire body froze.
It was Rachel.
Alive.
Sitting in a hospital bed.
Holding a piece of paper.
The timestamp was from the night she died.
Below the image was one sentence:
*Ask Daniel why Rachel wrote your name before she disappeared.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the photo.
Then toward the front door.
Because someone had been watching us.
Someone had waited three years to reveal the truth.
And now they wanted me to find out what Rachel wrote.
I grabbed my keys.
“Where are you going?”” Vanessa asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because for the first time since Rachel died, I had hope.
Not hope that everything would be okay.
Hope that Rachel had left me a way to protect Lily.
But when I opened the front door, a folded envelope was sitting on the doorstep.
No name.
No address.
Just three words written across the front.
*For Michael Carter.*
And underneath…
May you like
The handwriting was unmistakable.
It was Rachel’s.
