Chapter 3: What Vanessa Hid

I stayed awake that night until sunrise.

The folder sat on the kitchen table like a threat.

I kept reading the same documents over and over, hoping I had misunderstood something.

I hadn’t.

Three years earlier, when Lily’s mother passed away, I created a savings account for my daughter.

It wasn’t a huge amount.

It wasn’t meant to make her rich.

It was simply something I promised myself.

A little safety.

A little security.

A reminder that no matter what happened, Lily would always have something that belonged only to her.

Vanessa knew about that account.

She knew how important it was.

And according to the documents in front of me, she had accessed money connected to it.

I heard footsteps behind me.

“Michael.””

I didn’t turn around.

“How long?””

Vanessa stopped.

“What?””

“How long have you been using Lily’s money?””

Her silence answered before she did.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

I finally looked at her.

“You moved money from my daughter’s account.””

“I borrowed it.””

“Without asking?””

“I was going to put it back.””

“When?””

She looked away.

That was the problem.

There was always going to be a later.

Later, she would fix it.

Later, she would explain.

Later, Lily would understand.

But children don’t get their childhood back later.

I picked up one of the receipts.

“This was yesterday.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“I needed it.””

“For what?””

She didn’t answer.

“For what, Vanessa?””

She sat down.

“I had expenses.””

“Your expenses?””

She looked irritated.

“You make it sound terrible.””

“You used your stepdaughter’s savings to buy things for your daughters.””

“They’re my children too.””

“No.””

The word came out colder than I expected.

“They’re your children. Lily is mine. And I trusted you to treat them all fairly.””

Vanessa stood quickly.

“I do treat them fairly.””

I almost couldn’t believe she said it.

“Fairly?””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“Lily thinks she’s in trouble for needing shoes.””

Vanessa’s face softened for half a second.

Then she recovered.

“She’s sensitive.””

“No. She’s seven.””

The kitchen became silent.

Then Vanessa said something I would never forget.

“You don’t understand what it’s like.””

“What?””

“To raise three girls.””

I stared at her.

“I was raising one girl who thought she wasn’t worth as much as the others.””

Her eyes flashed.

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did she hide her shoes from me?””

Vanessa had no answer.

The next morning, I took Lily to school.

She was quiet in the car.

Too quiet.

Finally, she looked at me.

“Is Mommy leaving?””

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

“Why would you think that?””

“Because adults leave when they’re angry.””

I looked at her in the mirror.

“Lily, listen to me. None of this is because of you.””

She nodded.

But I knew children often hear the words we say and believe the fears they already have.

After dropping her off, I went back home.

Vanessa was waiting.

She had changed from her pajamas and was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee.

“I want to fix this,” she said.

I stayed standing.

“How?””

“I’ll apologize.””

“You need to do more than apologize.””

“I know.””

She looked different.

Not innocent.

Not guilty.

Just worried.

“Michael, there’s something else you don’t know.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What else?””

She reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

“I wasn’t the only person using the account.””

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

She unlocked the screen and showed me a message.

A conversation.

A name appeared at the top.

A name I recognized.

My brother.

Daniel.

My own brother, who had always defended Vanessa.

The message was short.

But it changed everything.

*“Did you move the rest of the money yet? He can’t know.””*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then back at the phone.

“Why,” I whispered, “does my brother know about Lily’s account?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

And then she said the one sentence that made me realize this betrayal was much bigger than my marriage.

“Because Daniel wasn’t helping me hide money from you…”

May you like

She swallowed.

“He was helping me hide the truth about what happened to Lily’s mother.””
