Chapter 5: My Brother’s Confession
Daniel didn’t sit down.
Neither did I.
The three of us stood in the kitchen like strangers who had accidentally ended up in the same house.
But Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
He was my brother.
The person who held my shoulder at Rachel’s funeral.
The person who told me, “I’ll always protect you and Lily.””
Now he stood there unable to look me in the eyes.
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Michael…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like we’re still okay.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
Daniel looked guilty.
And suddenly every memory I had of the past three years felt different.
“You knew about the insurance money,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew about Rachel’s account.””
“Yes.””
“You helped Vanessa access it.””
His silence confirmed everything.
I walked closer.
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because I thought I was helping.””
I almost laughed.
“You stole from my daughter.””
“I didn’t steal.””
“You moved her money.””
“I was trying to protect it.””
I stared at him.
“From who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“From me.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I wasn’t supposed to have control.””
“Then why did you?””
“Because after we married, you trusted me.””
That sentence made my skin crawl.
She said it like trust was a mistake.
Like kindness was something people could exploit.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Michael, listen.””
“No. You listen.””
I pointed at him.
“You watched me fall apart after Rachel died.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You watched Lily lose her mother.””
“I know.””
“You watched me build a new family because I thought I found people who cared about us.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because I made a mistake.””
I waited.
“That’s not enough.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Rachel knew she was getting worse.””
I felt the pain return.
“She created a legal trust for Lily.””
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because Rachel asked me not to tell you immediately.””
I froze.
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
That was all it took.
I understood.
My wife looked away.
“Vanessa was already involved before Rachel died.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my wife.
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Michael—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Tell me I heard that wrong.””
She didn’t.
Because she couldn’t.
Daniel continued.
“Vanessa knew Rachel was sick.””
“How?””
“I introduced them.””
The betrayal hit differently.
My brother.
My wife.
Both connected before I even knew Vanessa existed.
“You introduced my future wife to my dying wife?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I thought Vanessa could help.””
“With what?””
“With Lily.””
I looked upstairs.
My daughter.
The reason I was still standing.
“Rachel trusted her?””
“At first.””
That phrase destroyed me.
“At first?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Rachel started noticing things.””
“What things?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She noticed money disappearing.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“She noticed Vanessa was asking questions about the trust.””
“I never—”
“Rachel wrote everything down.””
I stared.
“Where?””
Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My hands trembled as I took it.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Something Rachel left for you.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because Vanessa convinced me you couldn’t handle it.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Rachel’s handwriting.
The handwriting I hadn’t seen in years.
My heart shattered.
I read the first line.
*Michael, if you are reading this, something happened that I was afraid of.*
I stopped.
The room disappeared.
Rachel’s words continued.
*Please don’t trust the person who tells you they are protecting Lily.*
I looked up slowly.
Vanessa was crying now.
But I didn’t care.
Because below Rachel’s warning was a name.
A name I never expected.
May you like
And it wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It was someone much closer.
