Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Lily’s Mother
For five seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The kitchen clock kept ticking.
The refrigerator hummed.
Outside, a truck passed by our house.
But all I could hear was Vanessa’s voice.
“He was helping me hide the truth about what happened to Lily’s mother.””
I stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa looked down at the floor.
“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””
“Find out what?””
She rubbed her hands together nervously.
For the first time since I met her, Vanessa looked small.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she knew the truth was finally catching up.
“My brother told me Daniel was involved,” I said.
“Now you’re telling me my own brother knows something about my wife’s death?””
Her eyes widened.
“Michael, don’t say it like that.””
“Like what?””
“Like we hurt her.””
The room went silent.
That sentence.
That one sentence.
It was the worst possible answer.
Because innocent people don’t immediately defend themselves against something nobody accused them of.
I stepped back.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Three years ago, after Lily’s mom died, you were destroyed.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I remembered.
Every night.
Every hospital hallway.
Every machine.
Every moment doctors told me there was nothing more they could do.
Lily’s mother, Rachel, was gone in a matter of weeks.
A sudden illness.
A nightmare that changed everything.
I had spent months trying to keep myself alive for my daughter.
Vanessa entered our lives almost a year later.
She was kind.
Patient.
She helped me rebuild.
At least, that was what I believed.
“She left behind paperwork,” Vanessa said.
“What paperwork?””
“Financial documents.””
I frowned.
“Rachel didn’t have much.””
“She had more than you knew.””
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa opened the folder again.
She pulled out another document.
“This.””
I took it.
It was a copy of an account statement.
Rachel’s name was printed at the top.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
A life insurance payment.
A large one.
My hands went cold.
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Why didn’t I know about this, Vanessa?””
“She asked Daniel to handle some things.””
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“My brother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Rachel trusted him.””
That hurt more than I expected.
Not just because of the money.
Because Rachel had trusted someone I loved.
Someone who apparently betrayed us both.
I grabbed my phone and called Daniel.
He answered after three rings.
“Michael?””
His voice sounded normal.
Like he wasn’t hiding anything.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“Why?””
“Answer me.””
Another pause.
“I’m at home.””
“I need you to come over.””
“Michael—”
“Now.””
I hung up.
Vanessa sat across from me.
“You need to understand something.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Rachel knew she was sick before anyone else.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She knew there was a possibility she wouldn’t be there for Lily.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“No.””
“She prepared everything.””
“No.””
“She made Daniel promise—”
“Stop.””
I couldn’t hear anymore.
Because suddenly I was back in that hospital room.
Rachel holding my hand.
Rachel telling me to take care of Lily.
Rachel smiling even though she was scared.
She never told me she thought she might die.
“She didn’t want you to know,” Vanessa whispered.
“Why?””
“Because she didn’t want you to spend her last days terrified.””
I looked at the documents.
Then at Vanessa.
“So what does this have to do with you stealing Lily’s money?””
Her face changed.
There it was.
The truth.
“The money was supposed to be protected.””
“By who?””
“By Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“And?””
She looked away.
“And me.””
My stomach dropped.
“You?””
“I was helping manage things after we got married.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You married me and then gained access to my daughter’s money?””
“I loved you.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I loved Lily too.””
I looked toward the stairs.
At the room where my daughter slept.
The room where she had probably cried quietly many nights.
“Did you?””
Vanessa flinched.
Before she could respond, the front door opened.
Daniel walked inside.
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the papers on the table.
His expression changed instantly.
He knew.
“You told him,” Daniel said.
Not a question.
A statement.
I stood.
“What did you both do?””
Daniel closed the door slowly.
And then he said something that made me realize Rachel’s death wasn’t the only thing they had hidden from me.
“Michael…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“There’s something about that night at the hospital you were never supposed to know.””
