Chapter 8: The Evidence Rachel Left Behind
I didn’t sleep.
I couldn’t.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily standing in that shoe store.
Her hand on her cheek.
Her broken shoes.
Her whisper.
“Daddy, I’m sorry.””
But now I knew something worse.
My daughter had not only been emotionally hurt.
She had been surrounded by people hiding the truth about her mother.
The next morning, I took Lily to school.
I watched her walk through the entrance.
She turned around before going inside.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are you still picking me up?””
The question was simple.
But it told me everything.
She was afraid people left.
“I’ll always pick you up.””
She smiled.
A small smile.
The kind that children give when they want to believe you.
After she disappeared inside, I drove straight to my attorney’s office.
I needed someone outside this family.
Someone who didn’t owe anyone loyalty.
By noon, I had copies of everything.
The trust documents.
The financial records.
Rachel’s medical reports.
The mysterious messages between Vanessa and Daniel.
My attorney, Laura, read through the papers silently.
Finally, she looked up.
“Michael, you need to prepare yourself.””
“For what?””
“This isn’t just financial abuse.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone may have committed a crime.””
The word sounded unreal.
Crime.
I had spent three years believing I lost Rachel to an illness.
Now I was sitting in an office wondering if someone had taken her from me.
Laura pointed at the documents.
“The first thing we need to know is who had access.””
“Daniel.””
“Anyone else?””
I thought.
Then I remembered.
Vanessa.
The hospital visits.
The medications.
The way she always insisted on helping.
“I need to check something.””
I left the office and drove back home.
Vanessa was there.
Packing a suitcase.
I stopped in the doorway.
“What are you doing?””
She froze.
“I’m leaving.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the suitcase.
“You’re running.””
“No.””
“Then why pack?””
She didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“Did you know?””
Her eyes filled.
“Know what?””
“About Rachel being poisoned.””
Vanessa looked away.
That was the answer.
I felt something break inside me.
“How long?””
She whispered.
“Six months.””
I stepped back.
“You knew for six months?””
“I suspected.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of Daniel.””
That name again.
Always Daniel.
I wanted to believe she was telling the truth.
But I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
“You watched me grieve.””
“I know.””
“You watched Lily grow up without her mother.””
“I know.””
“You watched us trust you.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Sorry doesn’t fix this.””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do.””
I took it.
Inside was a USB drive.
“What is this?””
“Rachel’s.””
I looked at her.
“Where did you get it?””
“Daniel gave it to me.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
“He wanted me to destroy it.””
I stared.
“Did you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Rachel was my friend before I became your wife.””
That sentence confused me.
“Then why did you hurt Lily?””
She looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Maybe that was the most honest thing she had ever said.
I took the USB drive.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From the unknown number.
One sentence.
*Don’t trust Vanessa. She is still protecting someone.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was watching me.
“What happened?””
I showed her the message.
The blood drained from her face.
Because she recognized the number.
“You know who sent this.””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips trembled.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
May you like
She whispered:
“Rachel.””
