Chapter 6: Rachel’s Last Warning
I read the letter three times.
The first time, I couldn’t understand the words.
The second time, I hoped I had misunderstood.
The third time, I accepted the truth.
Rachel knew.
She knew something was wrong before she died.
The letter was short.
But every sentence felt like a knife.
*Michael,*
*If you are reading this, I need you to be careful. I don’t know who to trust anymore.*
I stopped there.
Rachel.
The strongest person I knew.
The woman who smiled through pain.
The woman who worried more about me than herself.
She had been scared.
And she was alone.
I kept reading.
*I found missing money connected to Lily’s account. I asked Daniel about it. He said it was a mistake. But mistakes don’t happen repeatedly.*
My eyes moved to Daniel.
He looked like he wanted to disappear.
The letter continued.
*There is someone close to you who wants access to what belongs to Lily. Please protect our daughter.*
My hands shook.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
I held up the letter.
“Who was Rachel talking about?””
Daniel looked away.
Vanessa started crying.
“I never wanted this.””
I turned to her.
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
She wiped her face.
“Rachel suspected me.””
“Did she have a reason?””
Silence.
That was enough.
I walked upstairs.
I needed to see Lily.
I needed to remind myself why I was fighting.
When I opened her bedroom door, she was awake.
She was sitting on her bed holding her old stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?””
I forced myself to smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Are you and Mommy fighting?””
I sat beside her.
“Some grown-up things are complicated.””
She looked down.
“Is it because of me?””
The question hurt more than anything else.
“No.””
I touched her hair.
“Never because of you.””
She nodded.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy used to be nice.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
“She used to read me stories.””
“When?””
“Before Ava and Sophie moved in.””
My heart sank.
“Lily…”
She hugged her rabbit tighter.
“I think Mommy liked me more before she had to share.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because children notice everything.
Even things adults try to hide.
I kissed her forehead.
“I love you.””
“I love you too, Daddy.””
When I went back downstairs, Daniel was gone.
Vanessa was sitting alone at the kitchen table.
The letter was in front of her.
“You need to tell me everything.””
She looked exhausted.
“I can’t.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, you’ll never forgive me.””
I stepped closer.
“Try me.””
She shook her head.
“No, Michael.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Because the person Rachel was afraid of…”
She looked toward the front door.
“…is the same person who caused her death.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I shouldn’t have said that.””
I grabbed the table.
“Explain.””
She stood quickly.
“I need to leave.””
“Where are you going?””
“I need to think.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
For the first time, I saw real fear in her eyes.
“Michael, if Daniel finds out I told you this…”
The front door suddenly opened.
Both of us turned.
Daniel stood there.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman stood behind him.
An older woman.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Rachel’s mother.
My former mother-in-law.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
And the first words out of her mouth made my entire world collapse.
“Michael…”
She held an old photograph in her hand.
“Rachel didn’t die from her illness.””
May you like
She took a shaky breath.
“She died because someone made sure she wouldn’t survive.””
