Chapter 12: The Truth About Vanessa
The message stayed on my screen.
I didn’t blink.
I didn’t move.
Vanessa noticed.
“What did it say?””
I locked the phone.
“Nothing.””
She knew I was lying.
I knew she knew.
The problem was I no longer knew what was real.
Three years of marriage.
Three years of memories.
Three years of believing Vanessa was the person who helped save me after losing Rachel.
Now every memory had a question attached.
The next morning, I went to the bank.
Alone.
I needed answers without anyone influencing me.
The safety deposit box was small.
Almost disappointing.
After everything Rachel had hidden, I expected something dramatic.
Instead, there was a single folder.
A small recording device.
And one photograph.
The photograph was of Rachel and Lily.
Lily was two years old.
Rachel was smiling.
I held it for a long time.
Then I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
And one handwritten note.
*Michael, if you found this, you already know something went wrong.*
I pressed the recording device.
Rachel’s voice filled the small room.
I froze.
“Michael, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””
My eyes closed.
Her voice.
After three years.
“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””
A pause.
“But I couldn’t risk Lily losing both parents.””
I sat down.
Rachel continued.
“Daniel is involved, but he is not the person who started this.””
My breathing stopped.
“I need you to understand something. Vanessa did something terrible. But she did not do the worst thing.””
I looked at the documents.
Rachel knew.
She knew everything.
“I discovered someone was manipulating my treatment. I also discovered someone was trying to access Lily’s trust.””
A pause.
“Then I discovered why.””
The recording crackled.
“Michael, Lily is not just protected by the trust.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel’s voice continued.
“There is something inside that trust someone wants.””
I looked at the documents.
At the legal papers.
At the signatures.
Then I saw it.
A name.
A beneficiary.
Not Lily.
Someone else.
I stopped the recording.
Because I understood.
The money wasn’t the reason.
The trust wasn’t the reason.
There was something else hidden.
I turned the page.
A birth certificate copy.
Lily Carter.
But underneath it was another document.
A paternity test.
My hands shook.
The results were dated one month before Rachel died.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then the name of the other person tested.
My entire world stopped.
Because the test wasn’t proving Lily was mine.
It was proving someone else was her biological father.
And that person…
Was standing in my family photos for three years.
The same person who promised to protect her.
May you like
The same person who helped hide the truth.
Daniel.
