Chapter 13: The Secret Rachel Took to Her Grave

I stared at the paper until the words stopped looking real.

Daniel.

My brother.

Lily’s biological father.

My hands went numb.

The entire room seemed to tilt.

For three years, I had believed my greatest loss was Rachel dying.

I was wrong.

My greatest loss was discovering that the people closest to me had been living inside a lie.

I picked up the paternity test again.

The date.

The names.

The results.

Everything was there.

There was no mistake.

I pressed play on the recording again.

Rachel’s voice filled the room.

“Michael, I need you to hear this before you make any decisions.””

My heart tightened.

“I found out Daniel was Lily’s biological father.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing her say it made the pain sharper.

“I know this will hurt you. It hurt me too.””

Rachel paused.

“But Lily is not a mistake. She is not a secret. She is not a weapon for anyone to use.””

I looked down.

A memory came back.

The day Lily was born.

The day I held her for the first time.

I remembered crying.

I remembered telling Rachel I had never loved anyone so much.

I remembered believing that moment changed everything.

And it had.

Because whether I shared DNA with Lily or not, she was my daughter.

Rachel continued.

“Michael, I need you to know something about Daniel.””

I listened.

“He did not know Lily was his daughter when she was born.””

I froze.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“I never told him because I was afraid.””

Afraid.

That word again.

Everyone was afraid.

“But when Lily was three years old, Daniel found out.””

My stomach dropped.

That was the year Rachel became sick.

The same year Daniel suddenly started visiting more.

The same year he became obsessed with helping.

“Daniel said he wanted to be part of Lily’s life.””

I looked at the document.

“But then he learned about the trust.””

The room went silent.

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“That was when everything changed.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Rachel suspected Daniel wanted custody.””

The recording continued.

“He believed because he was Lily’s biological father, he had rights.””

My chest tightened.

“But Michael, you are Lily’s father in every way that matters.””

Tears burned my eyes.

Rachel knew.

She knew what I was afraid of.

She knew the truth would destroy me.

But she also knew something else.

I would never abandon Lily.

The recording continued.

“I asked Daniel to leave us alone. He refused.””

A pause.

“He said if I wouldn’t cooperate, he would expose everything.””

I whispered:

“Everything?””

Rachel answered as if she heard me.

“He threatened to tell you that Lily wasn’t yours.””

I sat there.

Alone.

Broken.

Then another sentence came.

“And that is when Vanessa became involved.””

I stopped.

I listened carefully.

“Vanessa found out the truth from Daniel.””

My jaw tightened.

“She didn’t know before.””

The recording crackled.

“She became afraid.””

Afraid.

Always afraid.

“She thought Daniel would destroy our family.””

I looked at the documents.

“So she helped him?””

Rachel’s voice answered.

“She made a terrible choice.””

I waited.

“She helped Daniel hide the paternity test.””

I closed my eyes.

But Rachel wasn’t finished.

“She also helped me.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

“Vanessa was the person who warned me about Daniel.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The woman who hurt Lily.

The woman who stole from her.

The woman I thought was the villain.

She had also tried to protect Rachel.

But Rachel’s next words changed everything.

“However, Michael, do not forgive too quickly.””

My heart sank.

“Because Vanessa knew more than she admitted.””

The recording ended.

I sat there for a long time.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

Her voice shook.

“I know you found it.””

I didn’t respond.

“Michael, please.””

“How long?””

A long silence.

“Since before Rachel died.””

My grip tightened.

“You knew Daniel was Lily’s father.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he wanted custody.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me.””

“I loved you.””

The words hurt.

Because once, I would have believed them.

“Did you love Lily?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you treat her like she didn’t belong?””

She couldn’t answer.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because every time I looked at Lily, I saw Rachel.””

That answer didn’t excuse anything.

But it explained something.

Vanessa wasn’t cruel because Lily was a child.

She was cruel because she was carrying jealousy she never dealt with.

And my daughter paid the price.

“Where is Daniel?”” I asked.

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I swear.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“Michael…”

“What?””

“You need to find him before he finds Lily.””

The call ended.

And for the first time, I wasn’t chasing the truth.

I was chasing a threat.
