Chapter 10: Rachel’s Final Letter

My hands shook before I even opened the envelope.

I knew that handwriting.

I had traced those letters with my fingers countless times.

On birthday cards.

On grocery lists.

On notes she left beside my coffee cup before work.

Rachel’s handwriting had always felt like home.

But now it was on an envelope sitting outside my front door three years after I buried her.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Open it,” she whispered.

I didn’t move.

“What if this is a trick?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Then we find out.””

I carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

No printed words.

No official documents.

Just Rachel’s handwriting.

My heart broke before I even started reading.

*Michael,*

*If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.*

I stopped.

The air left my lungs.

Rachel continued.

*I don’t know how much time I have left, but I need you to know something. I never believed my illness was the only reason I was getting worse.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

*Someone was changing my medication. Someone was trying to make me too weak to fight back.*

I looked up.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I kept reading.

*I wanted to tell you. I wanted to run to you and tell you everything. But I was afraid that if I was wrong, I would destroy the lives of innocent people.*

My eyes burned.

That was Rachel.

Even when she was scared, she worried about hurting others.

*Daniel told me he was protecting Lily. He said he was only trying to make sure she was financially secure. But I found documents showing he was moving things without permission.*

I looked toward the hallway.

Daniel.

My own brother.

The person who held my daughter after her mother’s funeral.

The person who promised to protect her.

*But Daniel was not alone.*

I stopped.

My heartbeat became louder.

*There was someone else helping him. Someone I trusted. Someone I allowed into my home.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

The next line made my blood run cold.

*Michael, if Vanessa is reading this with you, listen carefully.*

I froze.

Vanessa froze too.

Rachel knew.

She knew Vanessa might be there.

*Do not judge her only by what she did. Judge her by what she chooses to do when the truth comes out.*

I lowered the letter.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

*Vanessa made mistakes. She was weak. She was afraid. But Daniel was the person who controlled everything.*

My eyes widened.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew Daniel was worse than I admitted.””

The letter continued.

*Michael, I need you to protect Lily. Not just from people who hate her. Sometimes children need protection from people who claim they love them.*

That sentence destroyed me.

Because I thought about Lily hiding her shoes.

Lily apologizing for being hurt.

Lily asking if her parents were fighting because of her.

I folded the letter.

Then I noticed something.

A second page.

I pulled it out.

This page was different.

It wasn’t a letter.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts of money.

At the bottom was one final note.

*The person who started this is not the person you think. Ask about the hospital records from the night I died.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Hospital records?””

She nodded.

“Rachel suspected someone changed them.””

I grabbed my phone.

“We’re going to the hospital.””

Vanessa stood.

“Michael.””

I looked at her.

“I know you don’t trust me.””

“That’s true.””

She nodded.

“But I need to help you.””

I studied her face.

For the first time, I saw something besides guilt.

Regret.

“I should have protected Lily.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

The drive to the hospital was silent.

Neither of us spoke.

Because there was nothing left to say.

The truth was waiting.

When we arrived, we went straight to medical records.

The employee at the desk looked confused when I explained why I was there.

“I need Rachel Carter’s records from the night she passed away.””

The woman typed.

Then frowned.

“Sir…”

“What?””

“There’s something unusual.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

She turned the monitor toward us.

“Her file was accessed six months after her death.””

I stared.

“By who?””

She clicked.

Then her expression changed.

“I’m sorry.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“The access was under your name.””

I froze.

“My name?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

The woman shook her head.

“No, sir. According to this system, you personally requested changes to Rachel’s medical file.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked just as shocked.

Then the woman continued.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

She pointed at the screen.

“The person who entered the request wasn’t you.””

I stepped closer.

“Then who was it?””

The employee looked at the name.

May you like

And whispered:

“Michael Carter.””
