Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Papers

The next morning, I met with an attorney.

Not because I wanted a fight.

Because I needed protection.

For Ivy.

For myself.

For the truth.

The attorney, Daniel Hayes, spread the documents across his desk.

“This is sophisticated.””

I frowned.

“Sophisticated?””

“Yes.””

He pointed at the signatures.

“This isn’t someone randomly copying your name.””

“So what is it?””

“Someone studied you.””

That sentence made my skin crawl.

“What do you mean?””

“They matched your writing style. Your usual signature pattern. Even the pressure marks.””

I stared at the papers.

Ryan hadn’t just forged documents.

He had studied me.

My habits.

My identity.

My entire life.

“Can we prove it?””

Daniel nodded.

“Probably.””

“Probably?””

He sighed.

“The problem is motive.””

“I have motive.””

“Yes.””

He looked at me carefully.

“But we need evidence connecting Ryan directly.””

I thought about the folder.

The cameras.

The messages.

Then I remembered something.

The video.

“I have footage.””

Daniel looked up.

“Of what?””

“My brother entering my house.””

“Bring it.””

Two hours later, we watched every recording.

Ryan entering.

Ryan leaving.

Ryan talking to Claire.

Then we reached the night before everything exploded.

The night Claire stood in the backyard.

The audio played.

Ryan’s voice came through.

“You don’t understand what happens if you stop now.””

Claire answered:

“I’m not letting you take her away.””

Ryan replied:

“You already helped me.””

The video froze.

Daniel leaned forward.

“That’s important.””

I nodded.

“But not enough.””

Then another sound came through.

A door opening.

Someone else appeared.

Someone we hadn’t noticed before.

A man in a dark jacket.

Standing near the gate.

I paused the video.

“Who is that?””

Daniel zoomed in.

The image became clearer.

My stomach dropped.

Because I recognized him.

Not from my life.

From old photographs.

From the documents my parents showed me.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mark?””

I couldn’t answer.

The man in the video looked exactly like the person from the photo of my biological father.

Impossible.

Because my biological father had been missing for decades.

And yet there he was.

Standing outside my house.

Watching.

I called my mother immediately.

She answered.

“Mark?””

“Mom.””

My voice shook.

“I need you to look at something.””

I sent the image.

The response took less than a minute.

Then my phone rang.

My mother was crying.

“Where did you get this?””

“You know him.””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“Who is he?””

My mother whispered:

“Your father.””

I sat frozen.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought he was gone.””

“You thought?””

She began crying harder.

“Mark, there is something we never told you.””

I stood.

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“Your father didn’t abandon you.””

The room went silent.

“He was trying to come back.””

I looked at the paused image.

The man outside my home.

The man Ryan feared.

The man connected to everything.

“Then why did everyone say he left?””

My mother answered:

“Because someone wanted you to believe that.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

A picture appeared.

It was Ryan.

Standing beside the same man from the video.

The message underneath said:

*You finally found him. Now ask him why he came back for you.*

I stared at the screen.

Because one impossible truth had just become clear.

My brother wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.

May you like

My biological father was alive.

And he had been closer than I ever imagined.
