Chapter 5: The Truth Claire Hid
I followed Ryan inside.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I needed to know what he knew.
His house looked exactly like it always had.
Clean.
Organized.
Normal.
That almost made it worse.
People imagine betrayal comes with warning signs.
A villain’s face.
A dark room.
A threatening voice.
But sometimes betrayal wears a familiar smile and offers you coffee.
Ryan walked into the living room.
“I know you hate me right now.””
I laughed once.
“Hate isn’t the word.””
He nodded.
“Fair.””
“Start talking.””
He reached into a drawer and pulled out a folder.
Another one.
My stomach tightened.
“You’ve been keeping files on me?””
“No.””
“Then what is this?””
He placed it on the table.
“Claire’s.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why would you have her files?””
“Because she asked me to help.””
Those words landed heavily.
“She asked you?””
Ryan nodded.
“She was desperate.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were printed messages between Ryan and Claire.
My hands shook as I read them.
*I don’t know how much longer I can do this.*
Claire’s words.
Another message:
*Mark is never home. Ivy only listens to him. I feel like I’m disappearing.*
I looked up.
“She was unhappy.””
Ryan nodded.
“She felt trapped.””
“And your solution was sending my daughter away?””
His face hardened.
“No.””
“Then what was the solution?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That bothered me.
“Ryan.””
He sighed.
“Claire wanted space.””
“Space?””
“She thought sending Ivy to Willow Ridge for a year would give her time to rebuild her life.””
I stared at him.
“Rebuild?””
“Yes.””
“With my daughter gone?””
“She believed it would help.””
I closed the folder.
“No mother who loves her child does that.””
Ryan looked away.
“You don’t know what was happening.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice was sharper now.
For the first time, I saw something underneath.
Not confidence.
Frustration.
“Claire was drowning, Mark.””
I shook my head.
“And instead of helping her, you helped her destroy our family.””
“I tried to help her.””
“You helped her lie.””
Silence.
Then Ryan said:
“She wasn’t the one who signed everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“She never signed the final documents.””
My heartbeat changed.
“Then who did?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Because we both knew.
I looked down at the paperwork.
The fake signatures.
The school forms.
The custody transfer.
Someone had been moving pieces on the board.
And neither Claire nor Ryan was telling me the whole story.
I left his house before I did something I would regret.
When I got home, Ivy was sitting on the front steps.
She looked scared.
“What happened?””
I sat beside her.
“Nothing you need to worry about.””
She studied my face.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you going to leave too?””
The question hurt.
I turned toward her.
“Why would you ask that?””
She shrugged.
“Because everyone leaves eventually.””
My throat tightened.
“No.””
I took her hand.
“I’m not leaving.””
She nodded.
But she didn’t look convinced.
That night, I checked the security camera footage from the house.
I had installed cameras after a break-in at the station parking lot.
I rarely checked them.
But now I did.
I searched through the dates Ivy mentioned.
The nights I was working.
And there he was.
Ryan.
Walking into my house.
Again.
And again.
But then I saw something I wasn’t expecting.
On one recording, Ryan wasn’t alone.
Claire was standing outside the back door.
They were arguing.
I turned up the volume.
The audio was unclear.
But then one sentence came through.
Claire’s voice.
“I told you I wouldn’t go through with this.””
Ryan stepped closer.
“You don’t have a choice anymore.””
My blood ran cold.
Then Claire said something that changed everything.
“I never wanted Mark to lose Ivy.””
The screen froze.
I replayed it.
Again.
And again.
Claire never wanted me to lose Ivy.
So why did she pack the suitcase?
Why did she sign the forms?
Why did she tell our daughter I wanted her gone?
I kept watching.
The camera captured Ryan leaving.
Then Claire stayed behind.
She stood alone in the backyard.
Crying.
The next morning, I found a letter slipped under my front door.
No envelope.
No name.
Just three words written on the front.
*Protect Ivy. Please.*
I opened it.
May you like
And the first sentence made my entire body go numb.
*Mark, if you are reading this, it means Ryan knows I told you the truth…*
