Chapter 12: The Choice They Forced Me To Make

Ryan stopped at the edge of the driveway.

For once, he didn’t look confident.

He looked tired.

Daniel stood beside him.

I couldn’t understand it.

The man who helped me find the truth was standing beside the man who destroyed my family.

“Mark,” Daniel said.

I laughed quietly.

“Don’t.””

His face fell.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped in front of Ivy.

“You don’t get to explain.””

Ryan looked at my daughter.

Then immediately looked away.

That small movement told me something.

Even he knew what he had done.

“You used her.””

My voice shook.

Ryan swallowed.

“I never wanted her hurt.””

I stepped forward.

“But you packed her life into a suitcase.””

His expression changed.

“I was trying to fix something bigger.””

“There is nothing bigger than your niece.””

Silence.

Claire stood beside me.

“I trusted you.””

Ryan looked at her.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You convinced me I was protecting my daughter.””

Ryan looked down.

“I thought I was.””

The answer made me angry.

“You thought?””

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what’s at stake.””

“I know exactly what’s at stake.””

I held Ivy’s hand.

“My family.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“The land.””

I felt the air disappear.

“So that’s it.””

He didn’t answer.

“You destroyed my marriage. You terrified my daughter. You tried to erase me.””

His silence was enough.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Mark, there’s something you need to understand.””

I turned toward him.

“You.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“The documents Ryan created were never meant to succeed.””

“What?””

“They were bait.””

I frowned.

“For who?””

Daniel looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked away.

And suddenly I understood.

They weren’t working together.

Not completely.

They were trapped in something bigger.

“What are you hiding?””

No one answered.

Then Ryan said quietly:

“The person behind all of this is coming.””

A chill went through me.

“What person?””

Ryan looked toward the road.

“He doesn’t like loose ends.””

A black SUV turned onto the street.

Slowly.

Everyone became silent.

The vehicle stopped.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

And when I saw his face, I recognized him.

Not because I had met him.

Because I had seen him before.

In the old photographs.

Standing beside my biological father.

Ryan’s father.

My grandfather.

The man everyone said was gone.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Ivy.

And smiled.

“After all these years,” he said.

His voice was calm.

“You finally came home.””

Ivy squeezed my hand.

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled wider.

“You know exactly who I am.””

My blood ran cold.

Because the truth I had spent my entire life searching for was standing in front of me.

May you like

And it wasn’t about where I came from.

It was about why everyone had been so afraid of me finding out.
