Chapter 10: The Father I Never Knew
I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.
A single image had shattered everything I believed about my past.
For thirty-seven years, I carried one story in my mind.
My biological father left.
My adoptive parents saved me.
Ryan was my brother.
My family was simple.
Complicated sometimes, but simple.
Now every piece had changed.
My biological father was alive.
Ryan knew.
And somehow, the man I had never met was connected to the reason my brother tried to destroy my life.
The next morning, I drove to the address my mother gave me.
She didn’t want me to go alone.
I understood why.
But I needed answers.
Not more protection.
Not more people deciding what truth I could handle.
The house was outside town.
Small.
Old.
Almost hidden behind tall trees.
For a moment, I wondered if I should turn around.
Then the front door opened.
A man stepped outside.
And I knew immediately.
Not because he looked exactly like me.
He didn’t.
But there was something familiar.
The way he stood.
The way he looked at me.
Like he had been waiting for this moment for years.
“Mark.””
Hearing my name from his mouth felt strange.
I didn’t move.
“How do you know me?””
His expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
A lifetime of something unfinished.
“Because I have known your name every day since you were born.””
I clenched my jaw.
“You left.””
The man lowered his eyes.
“I know what you were told.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””
“Then why?””
He stepped back.
“Come inside.””
I almost refused.
But something stopped me.
Maybe it was anger.
Maybe curiosity.
Maybe the part of me that had spent years wondering.
Inside, the house was filled with old photographs.
Not many.
But enough.
Then I saw one.
A picture of a young man holding a baby.
Me.
My chest tightened.
“You had that?””
He nodded.
“I took it the day you were born.””
I looked away.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His face became heavy.
“Because I was told you were safe.””
“By who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Ryan’s father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Your grandfather and I were partners once.””
I stared at him.
“Partners?””
“Yes.””
He sat down.
“We owned land together. Developed properties. Built a business.””
“And then?””
“Then we discovered something.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“That the land wasn’t worth what we thought.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It wasn’t valuable because of buildings.””
He paused.
“It was valuable because of what was underneath.””
I felt a chill.
“What was underneath?””
He looked toward the window.
“Resources.””
I waited.
But he didn’t continue.
“Why does Ryan care?””
His expression hardened.
“Because Ryan believes that land should belong to his family.””
I shook my head.
“So all of this…”
“Yes.””
His voice was quiet.
“The documents. The custody plan. The lies.””
He looked at me.
“It was never about Ivy.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what was it about?””
“You.””
The answer hit harder than I expected.
“He wanted you gone.””
“Why?””
“Because as long as you remained alive and recognized legally, he couldn’t claim what he wanted.””
I stared at him.
“And you knew this?””
“I suspected.””
“That’s not enough.””
He looked down.
“I spent years trying to gather proof.””
“While I lived my life without knowing you existed?””
The guilt on his face was immediate.
“I thought staying away protected you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Silence.
Then he said something unexpected.
“I was wrong.””
Those words stopped me.
Because everyone else had excuses.
He admitted he was wrong.
A sound came from my phone.
A notification.
A message from Claire.
*Mark, you need to come home. Ivy found something.*
My heart dropped.
I stood immediately.
“What happened?””
The message was followed by another.
*It’s about Ryan.*
I looked at the man who was supposed to be my father.
For years, I wanted answers.
Now I had too many.
“I have to go.””
He nodded.
But before I reached the door, he said:
“Mark.””
I turned.
“I’m sorry I missed your life.””
I didn’t know how to answer.
So I left.
When I arrived home, Claire was waiting.
Her face was pale.
“What happened?””
She pointed toward the kitchen table.
On it was an old envelope.
“Ivy found it hidden behind the cabinet.””
I looked at her.
“What is it?””
Claire swallowed.
“Something Ryan left behind.””
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
*If Mark discovers the truth, activate the second plan.*
My blood went cold.
Because beneath the sentence was a name.
Not Ryan.
Not Claire.
May you like
Someone else.
Someone who had been involved from the beginning.
