Chapter 7: The Secret Behind My Name

I didn’t sleep after Claire’s phone call.

Not because I was afraid of the truth.

Because I was afraid of how long everyone had known it.

My parents.

Ryan.

Claire.

How many people had looked me in the eyes while carrying a secret that belonged to me?

The next morning, I drove to my childhood home.

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

The same cracked driveway.

The same oak tree where my father built me a swing.

The same porch where my mother used to wait when I came home from school.

Except now, every memory felt like it had a missing piece.

My mother opened the door.

When she saw my face, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“Mark?””

I stepped inside.

“I need to ask you something.””

Her smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

I looked around the room.

The place where I learned what family meant.

“Who is my biological father?””

The silence was instant.

My mother’s hand moved to her chest.

My father, sitting in his chair by the window, lowered his newspaper.

Neither of them spoke.

That was my answer.

“You knew.””

My mother’s eyes filled.

“Mark…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent my entire life thinking I knew who I was.””

My father stood slowly.

“Son, listen—”

“Did Ryan know?””

That question changed everything.

My mother looked away.

I felt something break inside me.

“He knew.””

My father sighed.

“Not everything.””

“How much?””

No one answered.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me.””

My mother stepped closer.

“We were.””

“From what?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“From losing you.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She sat down.

“Your biological father was not a good man.””

The room became heavy.

“He left before you were born. He made promises he never kept. When we adopted you, we decided you deserved a father who stayed.””

I swallowed.

“So you hid it.””

“Yes.””

“For my whole life.””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the floor.

A thousand questions rushed through my mind.

But one mattered most.

“How did Ryan find out?””

My father’s face changed.

“Because he was looking.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then my mother said something that made my stomach turn.

“Because Ryan was never searching for your father.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He was searching for something connected to him.””

My father walked to a cabinet and removed an old box.

“I hoped we would never have to open this again.””

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Letters.

My mother handed me one envelope.

“This came years ago.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The letter was short.

*If Mark ever asks about me, tell him I tried to come back.*

I looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

My mother whispered:

“Your biological father.””

I read the sentence again.

Tried to come back.

Something about it bothered me.

“Why didn’t he?””

My father looked away.

“Because someone stopped him.””

My heart slowed.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Ryan.””

My parents exchanged a glance.

And that was enough.

On the drive home, I called Claire.

She answered immediately.

“Did you find out?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Ryan knew about my father.””

Silence.

Then:

“I thought so.””

I frowned.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Claire.””

“I’m sorry.””

I hated hearing those words.

Not because they were meaningless.

Because they were too late.

“What does Ryan want with my father?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“I don’t know.””

“Then what did he mean when he said the truth would destroy everything?””

Another pause.

Then Claire said:

“Because your biological father left behind something valuable.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

Her voice lowered.

“But Ryan wasn’t looking for money.””

I tightened my grip.

“Then what was he looking for?””

Claire answered quietly.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Her reply came after several seconds.

“Proof that you were never supposed to inherit anything.””

I pulled the truck over.

The road was empty.

The world was quiet.

But my entire life had just become unfamiliar.

Because this was no longer about a boarding school.

No longer about a custody fight.

Ryan wasn’t trying to remove Ivy from my life.

He was trying to erase me from it.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text message.

From Ryan.

One sentence.

*Now you finally understand why your parents chose you.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Another message appeared.

*Ask them what happened the night they brought you home.*
