Chapter 11: The Second Plan

The name on the paper belonged to someone I never expected.

Daniel Hayes.

My attorney.

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Claire watched my face.

“What is it?””

I handed her the note.

She read it.

Then looked confused.

“Who is Daniel Hayes?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know anymore.

Two days earlier, Daniel was the person helping me uncover the truth.

Now his name was sitting inside Ryan’s secret plan.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Mark?””

My voice was cold.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“At my office.””

“I need to ask you something.””

“Okay.””

“Do you know Ryan Carter?””

Silence.

Just for a second.

But I heard it.

That tiny hesitation.

“Yes.””

My grip tightened.

“How?””

Daniel sighed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

My stomach sank.

“This way?””

“Mark, listen—”

“No.””

I cut him off.

“I am tired of listening to people explain why they hid things from me.””

There was silence.

Then Daniel said:

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

Again.

Everyone kept admitting things only after being caught.

“I knew Ryan years ago.””

“How?””

“We worked together.””

“Doing what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Legal consulting.””

“For him?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“Were you involved with the documents?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“I helped him understand the process.””

My anger rose.

“You helped him take my daughter.””

“No.””

“Then what did you help him do?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“Find the person controlling him.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Ryan wasn’t the person who started this.””

My voice lowered.

“Who was?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“But I found something after reviewing the documents.””

“What?””

“Ryan wasn’t trying to win custody.””

I looked at Claire.

“He was trying to force a legal situation where your assets would be frozen.””

My blood ran cold.

“So Ivy was a distraction.””

“Yes.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Then why the boarding school?””

“Because removing Ivy from your home would make you vulnerable.””

I understood.

Ryan didn’t just want my daughter gone.

He wanted me desperate.

Distracted.

Weak.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“Who is the person behind him?””

Silence.

Then:

“I think you already know.””

I looked at the note.

The name.

The second plan.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Look at the ownership records of the land.””

I pulled the documents from the table.

“Why?””

“Because the person who benefits from your disappearance is listed there.””

The call ended.

I immediately opened the records.

At first, nothing stood out.

Then I saw it.

A company.

A holding company.

And the owner.

My heart stopped.

Because the company wasn’t owned by Ryan.

It wasn’t owned by his family.

It was owned by someone who had been helping us.

Someone who had access to everything.

I turned toward Claire.

“We need to leave.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“Now.””

“Why?””

“Because we’ve been looking in the wrong direction.””

I grabbed Ivy’s hand.

“Get your coat.””

She looked scared.

“Daddy?””

“It’s okay.””

But even I didn’t believe that.

We rushed outside.

Then I saw it.

A car parked across the street.

The same car from the security footage.

Watching the house.

I froze.

Claire noticed.

“What is it?””

I whispered:

“They know.””

The car door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not Ryan.

Not a stranger.

Someone familiar.

Someone who had sat in my house.

Someone who had told me he was helping me.

Daniel Hayes walked across the street.

And he wasn’t alone.

Behind him stood Ryan.

Ivy grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I looked at the two men approaching.

May you like

And realized the worst part wasn’t that they had lied.

It was that they had been waiting for us to discover the truth.
