Chapter 6: The Letter From My Wife
I read the letter three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I couldn’t accept them.
Claire had written every sentence like she knew she might never get another chance.
*Mark, I’m sorry. I should have told you everything sooner.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
*Ryan didn’t help me because he cared. He helped because he wanted something from our family.*
I stopped.
Something.
What could Ryan possibly want?
I kept reading.
*Months ago, he told me he could fix our problems. He said Ivy needed stability and that your job was dangerous. He convinced me that if something happened to you, I would have no support.*
I sat down.
The anger I had toward Claire was still there.
But now it was mixed with something else.
Confusion.
Fear.
*At first, I believed him. I was tired. I was lonely. I hated admitting that I was struggling.*
A tear fell onto the page.
*But then I realized he wasn’t trying to help us. He was collecting information.*
I looked toward the basement.
The hidden folders.
The photos.
The documents.
*Ryan knew our schedule. He knew when you were gone. He knew everything about our finances.*
I stopped reading.
Finances.
That word stood out.
I grabbed the folder from the basement again.
This time, I searched every page.
At the bottom of one document was a company name.
A company I recognized.
Ryan’s construction business.
My brother had access to information about our home.
About our lives.
About everything.
Then I saw another document.
A loan agreement.
My name was listed.
But I had never taken out that loan.
My phone rang.
Claire.
For a moment, I didn’t answer.
Then I did.
“Where are you?””
There was silence.
Then her voice.
“She’s with you?””
I frowned.
“Who?””
“Ivy.””
My grip tightened.
“Of course she’s with me.””
Claire exhaled shakily.
“Good.””
“Claire, what is happening?””
“I need you to listen.””
“I’ve been listening for two days.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t understand. Ryan isn’t just trying to send Ivy away.””
I stood.
“What is he trying to do?””
Silence.
Then:
“He’s trying to take the house.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He found a way to create financial pressure. He convinced me to sign papers months ago. I thought they were about refinancing.””
My jaw tightened.
“And they weren’t.””
“No.””
“What were they?””
“A transfer agreement.””
I closed my eyes.
The puzzle pieces finally started connecting.
Ryan didn’t want Ivy gone because he hated her.
He wanted control.
The house.
The assets.
Everything.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
“And you hurt Ivy.””
“I know.””
The pain in her voice sounded real.
But real pain didn’t erase real damage.
“Where are you?””
“I’m at my sister’s.””
“Why?””
“Because Ryan told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would make sure you got custody and I would never see Ivy again.””
I looked toward the hallway.
At my daughter’s bedroom.
My little girl who thought everyone was going to leave her.
“He threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was scared.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I understood fear.
I had seen it in burning buildings.
But I also knew fear could make people hurt the ones they loved.
“Mark,” Claire whispered.
“What?””
“There’s something else.””
I waited.
“Something I found before I left.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“A second folder.””
“Where?””
“In Ryan’s office.””
I stood completely still.
“What was inside?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she said:
“Your adoption papers.””
I felt like the room tilted.
“What?””
“Mark…”
Her voice shook.
“Ryan found out something about your past.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“My past?””
“Yes.””
“What does that have to do with any of this?””
Claire went silent.
Then:
“Because Ryan said the truth about you would destroy everything.””
I stared at the wall.
My entire life.
My marriage.
My family.
My brother.
All of it suddenly felt like a house built on a foundation I had never seen.
“Claire,” I said slowly.
“What did he find?””
Her answer came in a whisper.
“The reason your parents never told you who your biological father was.””
The line went silent.

And for the first time in my life, I wondered if the family I had spent decades protecting…
was the same family that had been hiding the truth from me.
