Chapter 4: The Brother I Trusted
I didn’t call Ryan back.
Not because I wasn’t furious.
Because I knew anger was exactly what he wanted.
Firefighters are trained to control panic. When everyone else is running out of a burning building, we’re supposed to move toward the danger.
But that night, standing in my basement with a folder full of lies in my hands, I felt something I had never felt inside a fire.
Betrayal.
A fire destroys what it touches.
Betrayal makes you question everything that was already there.
I carried the folder upstairs and locked it inside my bedroom.
Then I sat across from Ivy at the kitchen table.
She was drawing.
A picture of our house.
Three people stood in front of it.
Me.
Her.
And Claire.
But Claire’s figure was smaller than the others.
I didn’t mention it.
Instead, I asked, “Sweetheart, can I ask you one more question?””
She looked up.
“About Uncle Ryan?””
“Yes.””
Her pencil stopped.
“What about him?””
“When did he start coming over?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“After you started working more shifts.””
My chest tightened.
“How often?””
“Mostly when you were gone overnight.””
“And your mom let him in?””
She nodded.
“Sometimes they talked in the kitchen.””
“About what?””
“I don’t know.””
She looked down.
“But one time I heard Mom crying.””
That surprised me.
“Crying?””
Ivy nodded.
“She said she didn’t want to do it anymore.””
I leaned forward.
“Do what?””
“I don’t know.””
The room went quiet.
Then Ivy whispered:
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Is Mom coming back?””
The question caught me off guard.
After everything Claire had done, after the lies and the suitcase and the documents, part of my daughter still wanted her mother.
That was the cruelest part.
Children don’t stop loving their parents just because those parents hurt them.
“I don’t know,” I admitted.
Ivy’s eyes filled.
“Did I make her leave?””
“No.””
My answer came instantly.
“No, Ivy. Never.””
She nodded, but I could tell she was trying to believe me.
That night, after she fell asleep, I called the school again.
This time, I asked for the admissions director.
A woman named Karen answered.
“Mr. Carter, I understand you have concerns about your daughter’s application.””
“I have more than concerns.””
I placed the fake documents on my desk.
“Someone submitted paperwork pretending to be me.””
There was silence.
Then Karen lowered her voice.
“I should tell you something.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What?””
“The application wasn’t unusual.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means we received several calls before the paperwork arrived.””
“From who?””
She hesitated.
“Your brother.””
I closed my eyes.
“Ryan.””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Karen paused.
“He explained that you were struggling to balance your career and parenting.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
“Did my wife confirm it?””
Another pause.
“No.””
That answer bothered me.
“Then why did you accept the application?””
“Because the documents showed two-parent approval.””
I looked at the signature again.
A fake version of my name.
Someone had planned this carefully.
After the call ended, I searched my phone for old messages from Ryan.
There were hundreds.
Birthday wishes.
Family jokes.
Photos from holidays.
Years of conversations.
A history built on trust.
I scrolled back.
Then I noticed something.
For months, every time I mentioned being scheduled for a long shift, Ryan responded immediately.
Too quickly.
Almost like he was waiting.
I stared at the screen.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Mark Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Laura. I work at the county records office.””
I sat up.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because I received a request to verify a custody document.””
My heart sank.
“What custody document?””
“A document listing you as voluntarily transferring temporary guardianship.””
I stood.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought you should know.””
“Who submitted it?””
The woman went quiet.
Then she said:
“Your wife.””
I looked toward Ivy’s bedroom door.
Everything suddenly became more complicated.
Because if Claire and Ryan were working together…
Why had Claire tried to leave?
Why did she look afraid when I came home?
And why did she allow Ryan to create documents that could destroy her own relationship with her daughter?
Something wasn’t adding up.
The next morning, I drove to Ryan’s house.
I needed answers.
He opened the door before I even knocked.
Like he knew I was coming.
“Come in,” he said.
I stayed outside.
“No.””
His smile disappeared.
“Mark—”
“What did you do?””
He sighed.
“Still pretending you don’t understand?””
“I found the documents.””
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“You were never supposed to find them this early.””
Those words hit me.
This early.
Not “I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Not “You’re misunderstanding.””
This early.
I stepped closer.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
Ryan looked past me toward my truck.
Then back at me.
“You should ask Claire why she agreed to everything.””
I froze.
“Agreed?””
“Yes.””
His voice dropped.
“Your wife wasn’t the victim here, Mark.””
He opened the door wider.
“Come inside. I’ll show you what she was hiding.””
I didn’t move.
May you like
Because I knew whatever was behind that door would change my family forever.
And I wasn’t sure I was ready to see it.
