Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed
I drove back to my parents’ house.
I didn’t even remember the drive.
My mind was trapped on one sentence.
The night they brought you home.
My mother opened the door before I knocked.
She looked like she had been waiting.
“You spoke to Ryan.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stepped inside.
“What happened that night?””
My parents looked at each other.
Years of silence passed between them in one glance.
Finally, my father sat down.
“Mark…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need the truth.””
My mother wiped her eyes.
“You were four years old.””
I froze.
“Four?””
She nodded.
“We adopted you when you were older than most children are adopted.””
I sat down slowly.
“You never told me that.””
“We wanted you to feel like you had always belonged.””
I looked at the documents in my hand.
“And I did.””
My voice softened.
“That’s why this hurts.””
My mother reached for my hand.
“Your biological father disappeared after a legal battle.””
“About what?””
“Your inheritance.””
The word sounded impossible.
I laughed quietly.
“I don’t have an inheritance.””
My father looked at me.
“That’s what we wanted you to believe.””
I stared.
“What?””
He opened another file.
Inside was a document with my name.
Not my current name.
My birth name.
My stomach turned.
“What is this?””
“Your biological father owned land.””
“How much?””
“Enough that powerful people wanted control of it.””
I looked at the paper.
“Ryan knew.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
My mother looked down.
“Because Ryan’s father was involved.””
I stopped.
“Wait.””
I looked between them.
“You mean…”
My father nodded.
“Ryan’s family and your biological father had business dealings.””
The room felt smaller.
“All these years…”
My voice disappeared.
My brother wasn’t just someone who betrayed me.
He was connected to the part of my life I never knew existed.
“Why would Ryan wait until now?””
My mother’s face changed.
“Because of Ivy.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“Because you have a child.””
I didn’t understand.
My father explained.
“If something happened to you, and if Ivy was removed from your care, control of certain assets would become easier.””
My blood ran cold.
“He planned this because of my daughter.””
My mother nodded.
“He knew your greatest weakness.””
I stood.
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“Mark.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My greatest weakness is exactly why he will lose.””
I left before they could say anything else.
When I arrived home, Claire was waiting outside.
I stopped the truck.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the last few weeks had aged her years.
“I didn’t know you would come.””
“I didn’t know if I should.””
She nodded.
“That’s fair.””
I looked at her.
“I need to know everything.””
“I’ll tell you.””
“No more secrets.””
“No more.””
We sat on the porch.
Claire told me everything.
Ryan had approached her months earlier.
He knew about my biological father.
He knew about the land.
He convinced her that I was hiding a dangerous past.
He told her she needed to protect Ivy.
At first, Claire believed him.
Then she discovered the truth.
“He wasn’t trying to protect her,” Claire said.
“He was trying to use her.””
I looked away.
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I had already helped him.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I tried to stop it.””
“You packed the suitcase.””
“I know.””
“You told her I wanted her gone.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I know.””
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
Then Ivy opened the front door.
“Mom?””
Claire turned.
Her face collapsed.
“Ivy.””
My daughter stood there.
Unsure.
Scared.
But she didn’t run.
Claire started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
Ivy looked at me.
Then back at her mother.
And quietly asked:
“Did you really want me to leave?””
Claire covered her mouth.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“Never.””
The three of us stood there.
Broken.
But finally honest.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
It was the county records office.
I answered.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“We found something unusual regarding the custody documents.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
The woman hesitated.
“The person who filed them wasn’t your wife.””
I looked at Claire.
“Then who was it?””
The woman’s voice lowered.
“Someone using your legal identity.””
I felt the cold return.
Because someone hadn’t just forged my signature.
May you like
Someone had created a version of me.
A version that could destroy my own family.
