Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Documents
My home office had always been my safe place.
That was where I kept contracts.
Tax records.
Family documents.
Everything important.
And now I was walking into it wondering who had betrayed me.
I unlocked the door.
Nothing looked different.
That scared me.
A thief would leave a mess.
Someone who belonged there would leave everything exactly where it was.
I opened the filing cabinet.
My birth certificate.
Insurance papers.
Bank statements.
Everything was there.
Then I noticed one folder.
Emily's trust documents.
It was slightly out of place.
I pulled it out.
The papers inside were missing.
Not all of them.
Just the important ones.
The original trust agreement.
The guardian information.
My identification copies.
My hands shook.
Someone had prepared carefully.
Someone had planned this.
I called Daniel.
"I found missing documents.""
He became silent.
"What documents?""
"The trust papers.""
"Michael, don't touch anything else.""
"Why?""
"Because if someone used your information, we need proof.""
I stared at the empty folder.
"I think I know who did it.""
"Who?""
I didn't answer.
Because saying the name made it more real.
Vanessa.
But something bothered me.
She was angry.
She was selfish.
She was desperate.
But was she smart enough to create all of this?
That night, I watched the security footage from the office.
The camera covered the hallway.
Not the room.
I fast-forwarded.
Days passed.
Then I saw something.
Three weeks earlier.
11:47 p.m.
Vanessa walked down the hallway.
She looked around.
Then entered my office.
I froze.
She stayed inside for twenty minutes.
When she came out, she was holding a folder.
I stopped the video.
My chest tightened.
But then something happened.
Five minutes later, another person appeared.
Someone I didn't expect.
Tyler.
The eight-year-old boy walked into the hallway.
He was holding a phone.
I leaned closer.
The video had no sound.
But Tyler looked nervous.
He looked toward Vanessa's office.
Then he placed something inside the trash can.
I immediately paused.
The next morning, I checked the trash folder.
Nothing.
The trash had already been emptied.
I sat back.
Something was wrong.
Tyler was involved.
But how?
The next day, I picked him up from school.
We drove home quietly.
Then I asked:
"Tyler, can I ask you something?""
He looked at me.
"About what?""
"The office.""
His face changed.
"What about it?""
"Did you go inside with your mom?""
He looked away.
"No.""
I didn't push.
Not yet.
Then he whispered:
"Are you mad at me?""
My heart softened.
"No.""
"Mom said you would be.""
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
"What did she say?""
Tyler stared out the window.
"She said if I didn't help her, we would lose everything.""
I parked the car.
"Help her do what?""
He started crying.
"I didn't know.""
I turned toward him.
"Tyler.""
"I just gave her the key.""
"What key?""
"The little key to your desk.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why did you have it?""
"Mom asked me to find it.""
I sat there silently.
Then Tyler said the words that answered everything.
"She told me we needed Emily's money because she was going to leave you.""
I looked at him.
"Leave me?""
Tyler nodded.
"She said after she got the money, we would move away.""
The pieces finally connected.
But before I could say anything, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Michael, I found the person who helped Vanessa submit the documents.""
"Who?""
His voice was quiet.
"Her attorney.""
I frowned.
"Her attorney?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Daniel paused.
"Because he wasn't representing Vanessa.""
My heart stopped.
"Then who was he representing?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Michael...""
"He was representing Emily.""
I looked toward Tyler.
Then toward the house.
And I realized the betrayal was deeper than I ever imagined.
