Chapter 4: The Locked Drawer

Sarah's words stayed in my head all the way home.

Vanessa's locked drawer.

I knew exactly which one she meant.

There was a narrow desk in our bedroom that Vanessa had claimed as hers after we married. The bottom drawer was always locked.

Whenever I asked about it, she called it her "private paperwork.""

I had never questioned her.

Marriage was supposed to include trust.

Now trust felt like the weapon she had used against me.

I entered through the garage.

The house was empty.

Vanessa had taken Tyler to soccer practice, and Emily was spending two hours with Sarah next door.

I went upstairs.

The bedroom felt different now.

Every framed photograph looked like evidence from a life I no longer recognized.

I knelt beside Vanessa's desk.

The drawer wouldn't open.

I tried the small keys in our household key box.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

Months earlier, Vanessa had dropped a tiny silver key while changing purses. She'd quickly picked it up and tucked it behind the jewelry box in her closet.

At the time, I thought nothing of it.

I opened the closet.

Moved the jewelry box.

There it was.

My hand trembled as I picked it up.

The key turned.

Click.

I pulled the drawer open.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Receipts.

Old cards.

A few envelopes.

Then I saw a blue notebook underneath them.

I opened it.

The first pages contained grocery lists.

Then I reached a page divided into two columns.

TYLER.

EMILY.

Under Tyler's name were things like soccer fees, new sneakers, restaurant meals, toys.

Under Emily's name were shorter entries.

Rice.

School lunch.

Soap.

Then beside several dates Vanessa had written the same word.

Punishment.

My stomach twisted.

I turned another page.

There were notes.

"Asked for seconds.""

"Complained about Tyler getting dessert.""

"Told Michael she was hungry.""

And beside that last sentence:

NO TREATS — 3 DAYS.

I stared at the handwriting.

This wasn't Vanessa losing her temper once.

She had been keeping track.

Planning it.

My phone rang.

Sarah.

"Michael?""

"I'm here.""

"Did you find it?""

"How did you know about the drawer?""

Silence.

Then Sarah said, "Because Vanessa asked me to help her move that desk last month. The drawer came open.""

"You saw this notebook?""

"Only part of it.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Her voice cracked.

"I should have.""

I closed my eyes.

"Sarah.""

"I thought it was some strict parenting chart. Then I started noticing Emily asking me for snacks whenever she came outside.""

My hand tightened around the notebook.

"How often?""

"Almost every time.""

I couldn't speak.

Sarah continued.

"Last Tuesday she ate two bananas and a sandwich at my house.""

I sat heavily on the bed.

"She ate dinner here that night.""

"Did she?""

The question landed like a brick.

Before I could answer, I heard the garage door opening downstairs.

Vanessa was home.

"Sarah, I have to go.""

"Michael, don't confront her while you're alone.""

But I was already standing.

I slipped the notebook inside my work bag and locked the drawer again.

Footsteps came upstairs.

Vanessa entered.

She stopped when she saw me.

"You're home early.""

"So are you.""

"Practice was canceled.""

She studied my face.

"Where's Emily?""

"Sarah's.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"I don't like her spending so much time there.""

"Why?""

"Sarah interferes.""

"With what?""

Vanessa stared at me.

"Why are you asking questions like that?""

I shrugged.

"Just asking.""

She walked toward the desk.

My pulse jumped.

She touched the bottom drawer.

Still locked.

Then she turned toward me.

"Michael.""

"What?""

"Did you go through my things?""

"No.""

I hated lying.

But I needed time.

Vanessa stared at me for several seconds.

Then Tyler shouted from downstairs.

"Mom! I'm hungry!""

Her entire expression softened.

"I'll make you something.""

She left.

I waited ten seconds.

Then followed.

Vanessa opened the refrigerator and pulled out chicken, cheese, fruit, and juice.

Tyler sat at the table.

"Can I have fries too?""

"Of course, sweetheart.""

I watched her.

Then I asked casually, "What will Emily have?""

Vanessa stopped.

"She's at Sarah's.""

"She'll come home.""

"She already ate.""

I looked at her.

"How do you know?""

Vanessa turned slowly.

For the first time, I saw fear flicker behind her eyes.

"Because Sarah always feeds her.""

There it was.

Vanessa knew.

She knew Emily went next door hungry.

And she'd allowed it.

Maybe depended on it.

I walked outside and called Sarah.

"Bring Emily over.""

Five minutes later, my daughter came through the gate holding Sarah's hand.

She saw me and smiled.

"Daddy!""

I crouched and hugged her.

Then I asked the question I'd been afraid to ask.

"Sweetheart, when Mommy says you've already eaten dinner... where do you usually eat?""

Emily looked confused.

"Sometimes Sarah's.""

"And when Sarah isn't home?""

Her smile disappeared.

She glanced toward the kitchen window.

Then she whispered:

"I wait until breakfast.""

My chest went cold.

But Sarah suddenly touched my arm.

"Michael.""

She was looking toward the second-floor window.

Vanessa stood behind the curtain.

Watching us.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text from Vanessa appeared.
