Chapter 12: The Hearing Date
I read the message again.
Michael Carter has to disappear before the hearing.
Those words changed everything.
This wasn't about money anymore.
It was about control.
I immediately turned off Tyler's tablet.
Then I looked at him.
"Tyler, did anyone ever tell you to keep secrets from me?""
He nodded slowly.
"Mom said adults have problems kids don't understand.""
I swallowed.
"Did the man say anything else?""
Tyler thought.
"He said Emily was supposed to belong to his family.""
My heart stopped.
"Belong?""
Tyler nodded.
"He said she was Rachel's daughter first.""
I felt anger rise.
But I controlled it.
Because Tyler was watching me.
A child who had already been trapped between adults.
I went downstairs.
Vanessa was sitting on the couch.
She looked up.
"Did you find something?""
I held up the tablet.
Her face changed.
"What is that?""
"Someone has been using Tyler to help them.""
She stood.
"What?""
"Someone who knows about Emily's trust.""
Vanessa looked confused.
"I don't understand.""
"Your brother-in-law?""
She froze.
"What?""
"Rachel's brother.""
The color disappeared from her face.
"I don't have contact with him.""
"Are you sure?""
She didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
"Vanessa.""
She sat down slowly.
"His name is Andrew.""
"What happened between you two?""
"Nothing.""
"Don't lie.""
She covered her face.
"After Rachel died, Andrew blamed you.""
"Me?""
"He thought you were keeping Emily away from Rachel's family.""
I stared at her.
"I never stopped them from visiting.""
"He didn't believe that.""
"Then why didn't he come to me?""
She looked up.
"Because he didn't want Emily.""
A chill went through me.
"What did he want?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Control.""
That night, Daniel arranged an emergency meeting.
The next morning, I sat across from him with documents spread across the table.
"The hearing is scheduled.""
"When?""
"Two weeks.""
I looked at him.
"Two weeks?""
"Yes.""
"And until then?""
"Nothing changes legally.""
I nodded.
Then Daniel pushed another folder toward me.
"There's something else.""
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a letter.
Rachel's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My heart stopped.
"Where did you get this?""
"It was attached to the original trust documents.""
I read the first line.
Michael,
If anything happens to me, I need you to promise me something.
I couldn't continue.
My eyes blurred.
Daniel waited.
After a moment, I kept reading.
Protect Emily from anyone who sees her as a solution instead of a child.
I closed my eyes.
Because Rachel had known.
Maybe not exactly.
But she knew someone might try.
The final paragraph was short.
There is one person I never trusted around my daughter. If he ever returns, do not let him convince you that blood matters more than love.
I looked at Daniel.
"She meant Andrew.""
He nodded.
"Probably.""
My phone rang.
It was the school.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A nervous voice replied.
"Mr. Carter, this is Emily's teacher.""
My stomach tightened.
"Is Emily okay?""
There was a pause.
"She's fine.""
"Then what happened?""
The teacher lowered her voice.
"Someone came to pick her up.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who?""
"He said he was family.""
I stood up.
"Where is Emily?""
"She's still here.""
I exhaled.
"Who was the man?""
The teacher paused.
Then said:
"He left when we asked for identification.""
I gripped the phone.
"What did he look like?""
Her answer made my entire body freeze.
"Mr. Carter...""
"Yes?""
"He looked exactly like the man in Emily's family photos.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Which photos?""
The teacher whispered:
"Rachel's brother.""
Andrew.
He was back.
May you like
And this time...
He wasn't hiding. :::
