Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
For three seconds, I couldn't speak.
I stood in my kitchen, holding the phone against my ear, staring at Vanessa like the entire world had shifted beneath my feet.
"My signature?""
Daniel Mercer sounded just as confused as I was.
"Yes, Michael. The petition lists you as the requesting guardian.""
I looked down at my hands.
"I never signed anything.""
There was a pause.
Then Daniel said quietly, "That's what I suspected.""
Vanessa's face changed.
She wasn't angry anymore.
She was afraid.
"Put him on speaker," she whispered.
I ignored her.
"Daniel, send me a copy.""
"I already did.""
My phone buzzed.
An email appeared.
I opened the attachment.
The document loaded.
My name was there.
My address.
Emily's information.
And at the bottom...
A signature.
It looked like mine.
Almost.
But I knew my own handwriting.
I knew every curve.
Every mistake.
This wasn't my signature.
Someone had copied it.
"Daniel," I said, "who submitted this?""
Another pause.
"Your wife.""
I looked up.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"No.""
"Daniel said you submitted it.""
"He's wrong.""
"Why would he lie?""
She had no answer.
I ended the call.
The kitchen was silent.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"Michael, you need to listen.""
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe those words were coming from her.
"Listen?""
"Yes.""
"After everything?""
"I made a mistake.""
"A mistake?""
I held up the phone.
"You forged my signature.""
"I didn't forge anything.""
"Then explain it.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I felt something inside me break.
Not anger.
Not even betrayal.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
"You were going after your stepdaughter's money.""
"No.""
"You treated her differently because you knew she had something you wanted.""
"That's not true.""
"Then why?""
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
"Of being left with nothing.""
I stared at her.
"We have a house.""
"You have a house.""
That sentence stopped me.
"What does that mean?""
She looked away.
"You built this life before me.""
I shook my head.
"We built it together.""
"No. You had everything. A successful business.
A daughter with an inheritance. A future.""
"And you?""
She looked toward the stairs.
"Tyler had nothing.""
I lowered my voice.
"Tyler has me.""
"But not enough.""
I stared at her.
Because for the first time, Vanessa admitted the truth.
It was never about discipline.
It was never about food.
It was about what she believed Emily had.
And what she believed Tyler deserved.
"How long have you been planning this?""
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
"Months.""
My heart sank.
"Months?""
She nodded.
"I was only trying to make things fair.""
"Fair?""
I almost couldn't say the word.
"Taking from a child isn't fair.""
Her face hardened.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"I understand perfectly.""
At that moment, Emily appeared.
"Daddy?""
I immediately turned.
She was holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her eyes moved between us.
"Are you mad at Mommy?""
I froze.
Because despite everything Vanessa had done, Emily was still a child.
She still loved her mother.
I crouched.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
She walked into my arms.
Then she whispered:
"Did I do something wrong?""
Those words destroyed me.
"No.""
I hugged her tightly.
"You did nothing wrong.""
Behind me, Vanessa started crying.
But I couldn't tell if she was sorry.
Or afraid.
The next morning, I met Daniel at his office.
He placed a folder in front of me.
"Michael, there is more.""
I opened it.
Inside were copies of emails.
Requests.
Questions.
Financial documents.
All connected to Vanessa.
"She contacted several people?""
Daniel nodded.
"She asked about changing guardianship arrangements.""
My hands went cold.
"Guardianship?""
"She wanted to know if she could become the primary person controlling Emily's trust.""
I stared at the papers.
"She wanted control over my daughter's money.""
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Before I left, he stopped me.
"Michael.""
I turned.
"There is something else.""
"What?""
He hesitated.
"One of the documents she submitted included a statement.""
"What statement?""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"She claimed Emily was living in an unsafe emotional environment with you.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"She accused me?""
"Yes.""
"Of what?""
Daniel slid one more page across the desk.
I read the first sentence.
And my blood ran cold.
May you like
Because Vanessa hadn't just tried to take Emily's money.
She had tried to take Emily away from me.
