Chapter 8: The Mother Who Lied

I sat in my truck outside Daniel's office for almost an hour.

I couldn't start the engine.

I couldn't move.

I kept reading the same sentence.

Michael is emotionally unstable and unable to provide consistent care.

The words felt unreal.

Me.

The man who had worked fourteen-hour days to give Emily a good life.

The man who packed her lunches.

The man who stayed awake when she had nightmares.

According to Vanessa, I was the problem.

I drove home slowly.

When I arrived, Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

"I know where you went.""

I placed the folder down.

"Good.""

She looked at it.

"You talked to Daniel.""

"Yes.""

Her eyes filled.

"Michael...""

"No.""

I held up my hand.

"Today, you listen.""

She went quiet.

"You tried to take Emily's money.""

"I was trying to protect Tyler.""

"You tried to take my daughter from me.""

"I never wanted that.""

"Then why did you file that statement?""

She looked away.

"I was angry.""

"Anger doesn't create fake documents.""

She didn't respond.

I walked toward the hallway.

Then stopped.

"How long have you been telling people I'm a bad father?""

Her silence answered.

I turned around.

"Vanessa.""

"Only my sister.""

"Who else?""

She didn't speak.

"Who else?""

Finally, she whispered:

"Tyler's school counselor.""

I felt sick.

"You told his school?""

"I was trying to get advice.""

"About me?""

"No.""

"About Emily.""

There it was again.

She couldn't even say my daughter's name without turning it into a problem.

That evening, I picked Emily up from school.

Her teacher, Mrs. Collins, stopped me before I left.

"Mr. Carter?""

I turned.

"Yes?""

She looked nervous.

"I wanted to ask if everything is okay at home.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

She lowered her voice.

"Emily has been unusually quiet lately.""

I looked toward my daughter.

She was putting her backpack on.

"What did she say?""

Mrs. Collins hesitated.

"She said she doesn't want to make Mommy angry.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did she say anything else?""

"She asked me if children can be replaced.""

My heart broke.

"Replaced?""

Mrs. Collins nodded.

"She said Tyler was the child Mommy really wanted.""

I walked outside.

Emily held my hand.

"Daddy?""

I looked down.

"Yes?""

"Are you mad?""

"No.""

"At Mommy?""

I stopped.

Because I didn't know how to answer.

I couldn't tell my five-year-old that her mother had betrayed her.

I couldn't make her carry that pain.

So I simply said:

"I'm trying to understand everything.""

That night, after Emily slept, I found Vanessa sitting alone in the living room.

"We need to talk about custody.""

Her face changed.

"You want a divorce.""

"I want my daughter safe.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm her mother.""

"And I'm her father.""

"You can't take her away.""

I looked at her.

"Did you think about that when you tried to take her trust?""

She looked down.

"I made mistakes.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Mistakes happen once.""

She started crying.

"This isn't who I am.""

I looked toward Emily's bedroom.

"I don't know who you are anymore.""

The next morning, I received another call from Daniel.

"Michael, I found something.""

"What?""

"The petition wasn't the only document.""

My stomach tightened.

"What else?""

"There was a second form.""

"What kind?""

"An application for emergency access.""

"Emergency?""

Daniel's voice became serious.

"Someone claimed Emily was being denied basic needs.""

I looked at the kitchen table.

At the empty bowl.

At the memory of cold rice.

My voice became quiet.

"Did Vanessa write that?""

"No.""

"Then who did?""

Daniel paused.

"That's the problem.""

"What?""

"The signature matches yours.""

I closed my eyes.

"Impossible.""

"Michael...""

"What?""

"The person who submitted it knew your handwriting.""

My blood turned cold.

"Are you saying someone close to me did this?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Michael, you need to look at who had access to your personal documents.""

I slowly turned toward the hallway.

Toward the office.

May you like

Toward the place where I kept everything important.

And suddenly, I knew exactly where I needed to look.
