Chapter 3: The Hidden Recording

I stared at the message for almost a full minute.

Unknown number.

No name.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

Check the camera in your daughter's room.

My first reaction was anger.

Someone was playing games with me.

Someone was trying to destroy my marriage.

But then I looked through the window again.

Emily was standing quietly while Vanessa took the cookie from her hand.

And I remembered the red mark on my daughter's cheek.

I remembered the bowl of cold rice.

I remembered her whispering that nobody was supposed to see.

I drove home without saying a word.

That night, after Vanessa went to bed, I sat in front of my computer.

The security system for Emily's room had been installed when she was a baby.

Mostly because she used to wake up crying.

I rarely checked it anymore.

I entered the password.

The screen loaded.

My heart started pounding.

There were hundreds of recordings.

Days.

Weeks.

Months.

I clicked the newest one.

At first, everything looked normal.

Emily was playing with her dolls.

Then Vanessa walked in.

The moment she entered, Emily stopped smiling.

That was the first thing I noticed.

My daughter changed when her mother entered the room.

She became quiet.

Careful.

Afraid.

I watched the recording.

"Why are your toys on the floor?""

Vanessa asked.

Emily quickly started picking them up.

"Sorry, Mommy.""

"You always make a mess.""

"I was playing.""

"You always have an excuse.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

But I kept watching.

Because I needed to know.

I watched another recording.

Then another.

And every single one showed the same thing.

Vanessa treating Emily differently.

Not once.

Not twice.

Over and over.

The worst part wasn't the yelling.

It wasn't even the punishment.

It was the way Emily looked at her.

Like she was constantly trying not to make a mistake.

At midnight, I heard footsteps behind me.

I quickly closed the laptop.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

"What are you doing?""

I turned around.

"Couldn't sleep.""

She looked at the computer.

"Are you watching something?""

"No.""

A strange silence filled the room.

Then she smiled.

But it wasn't a warm smile.

It was a warning.

"Michael, you need to be careful.""

I looked at her.

"Careful?""

"Yes.""

She walked closer.

"You are letting Emily manipulate you.""

I felt disbelief spread through me.

"She's five.""

"Exactly.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Children learn how to control people.""

I couldn't answer.

Because I suddenly realized something.

Vanessa didn't see Emily as a child who needed protection.

She saw her as a problem.

The next morning, I made coffee and waited.

I wanted to ask Vanessa directly.

But before I could, my phone rang.

It was my neighbor, Sarah.

I answered.

"Michael?""

Her voice sounded nervous.

"Can we talk?""

"About what?""

There was a pause.

Then she whispered:

"I saw something last week, and I wasn't sure if I should tell you.""

I stood up.

"What did you see?""

Sarah took a breath.

"Your wife came outside with Emily.""

My stomach tightened.

"And?""

"Emily was crying.""

I gripped the phone.

"What happened?""

Sarah went silent for a moment.

Then she said:

"Michael... Emily wasn't crying because she was hurt.""

A chill went through me.

"Then why was she crying?""

Sarah lowered her voice.

"Because your wife told her something.""

"What?""

The answer came quietly.

"She told Emily that if she ever told you what happened at home... you would leave her too.""

I couldn't breathe.

Because suddenly, the slap wasn't the only thing I had to worry about.

Someone had been teaching my daughter to be afraid.

And then Sarah said one more thing.

May you like

Something that made me grab my keys immediately.

"Michael... I think you need to see what's inside Vanessa's locked drawer.""
