Chapter 13: The Man Who Wanted Her Back
I drove to Emily’s school faster than I ever had before.
Every red light felt like an insult.
Every second felt dangerous.
My daughter was still inside that building, and for the first time, I understood what Vanessa had been trying to do.
She hadn’t just been chasing money.
She had opened a door.
And someone else had walked through it.
When I arrived, Emily was sitting in the front office with her teacher.
The moment she saw me, she ran.
"Daddy!""
I dropped to my knees and hugged her.
"I'm here.""
She held onto me tightly.
"Who was that man?""
I looked at her.
"What man?""
"The man who said he knew Mommy.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did he say?""
Emily looked toward her teacher.
"He said he was my uncle.""
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Her uncle.
Andrew.
The school receptionist handed me the visitor log.
"He signed in as a family member.""
I looked at the name.
Andrew Whitmore.
My hands tightened around the paper.
The same man who had tried to control Emily's future.
The same man Rachel had warned me about.
I called Daniel.
"He showed up at Emily's school.""
Daniel went silent.
"Is Emily safe?""
"Yes.""
"Do not let her out of your sight.""
"I won't.""
I ended the call.
When I returned home, Vanessa was waiting.
She looked terrified.
"Did he come?""
I stopped.
"You knew he might.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"No.""
"Then why did you ask that?""
She looked away.
"Because I knew he was getting desperate.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell me everything.""
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time since this nightmare started, she looked completely broken.
"Andrew hated that Rachel left everything to Emily.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed Rachel's family should control it.""
"Control her money.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Rachel refused.""
I listened carefully.
"She told him Emily was a child, not an investment.""
Those words hit me.
Exactly what I had been thinking.
"What happened after that?""
"Rachel cut him off.""
"And after Rachel died?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He came back.""
"To see Emily?""
"No.""
She looked at me.
"To talk about the trust.""
I felt anger rise.
"How long have you known?""
"Only recently.""
"When?""
"When he contacted me.""
I stared at her.
"You worked with him.""
She immediately shook her head.
"Not like that.""
"You filed documents because of him.""
"I was angry, Michael.""
"Anger doesn't explain everything.""
She covered her face.
"He promised he could help Tyler.""
There it was.
The reason.
"You traded my daughter for a promise.""
Her tears fell.
"I thought I was protecting my son.""
"And you hurt my daughter.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"I know.""
That was the first time she said it.
No excuses.
No anger.
Just guilt.
That evening, Daniel arrived with additional paperwork.
"We have enough to challenge the hearing request.""
I looked at him.
"What about Andrew?""
Daniel placed another folder down.
"He has a history.""
I opened it.
Complaints.
Financial disputes.
Legal warnings.
Nothing criminal.
But enough to show a pattern.
"He always targets family assets?""
Daniel nodded.
"Whenever there is an inheritance involved.""
I looked toward Emily's room.
She was coloring at her desk.
A normal moment.
A moment I wanted to protect forever.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice replied.
"Michael Carter.""
My body went still.
"Andrew.""
A quiet laugh.
"So you know who I am.""
"What do you want?""
"The same thing Rachel wanted.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"To protect Emily.""
I almost laughed.
"By taking her money?""
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
His voice became colder.
"Rachel made a mistake trusting you.""
I tightened my grip.
"What did you say?""
"She thought love was enough.""
I looked at Emily.
"Don't talk about her.""
"You have no idea what family means.""
"I know exactly what family means.""
"No.""
His voice lowered.
"Family is blood.""
I looked at the hallway.
At my daughter.
The little girl who had been afraid to ask for food.
"You're wrong.""
A pause.
Then Andrew said:
"The hearing will prove that.""
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Because for the first time...
I wasn't fighting Vanessa.
May you like
I wasn't fighting a lie.
I was fighting someone who believed my daughter belonged to him.
