Chapter 10: The Guardian Nobody Knew About
I sat frozen in my truck after Daniel's words.
"He was representing Emily.""
I couldn't understand.
An attorney representing my daughter should have been protecting her.
Not helping someone take control of her life.
"Daniel," I said slowly, "explain.""
His voice was calm, but I could hear the concern.
"The attorney who submitted those documents was hired under a temporary guardianship request.""
"By who?""
"That's what I'm trying to determine.""
I looked through the windshield at my house.
The place where I thought my family was safe.
The place where my daughter had been eating cold leftovers while adults planned around her future.
"Find out.""
"I already started.""
"And?""
A pause.
"Michael, the paperwork claims there was a family emergency.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"What emergency?""
"That Emily was allegedly being neglected.""
The word hit me.
Neglected.
The same accusation Vanessa had been preparing.
The same lie she had been building.
"Who signed the complaint?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
"Your wife.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
But then Daniel continued.
"There is something strange.""
"What?""
"The attorney she contacted wasn't a family lawyer.""
"Then what was he?""
"An estate specialist.""
My stomach dropped.
She wasn't trying to protect Emily.
She was trying to get access.
"Daniel, can she legally do this?""
"Not without evidence.""
"Then why was she trying?""
"Because if she convinced a judge that Emily was in danger, she could request temporary financial control.""
I looked down.
The amount flashed in my mind.
$486,000.
Money that belonged to my little girl.
A future her mother had saved for her.
Not a weapon for someone else.
I drove home.
When I walked inside, Vanessa was sitting at the table.
She looked exhausted.
Like she hadn't slept.
"We need to talk.""
She looked up.
"I know.""
"How?""
"Daniel called.""
I stopped.
"He called you?""
She nodded.
"He told me you know everything.""
I placed my keys down.
"Do you?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know I went too far.""
"Too far?""
I laughed quietly.
"You forged my signature.""
"I was desperate.""
"You took documents from my office.""
"I thought I was helping.""
"You tried to convince people I couldn't care for my own daughter.""
Vanessa covered her face.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
She looked at me.
"That you would always choose Emily.""
The honesty shocked me.
Not because it was surprising.
Because she finally admitted it.
"You were competing with a five-year-old.""
"No.""
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"You weren't trying to build a family. You were trying to win against a child.""
Her tears fell.
"I loved you.""
"Maybe.""
I looked away.
"But love doesn't look like this.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"There's something you don't know.""
I turned back.
"What?""
She looked toward the stairs.
"Rachel wasn't just rich.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"Your daughter's trust wasn't the only thing she left.""
My heart started beating faster.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Rachel's parents had another account.""
"Another account?""
"Yes.""
"How do you know?""
She looked down.
"I found documents.""
"When?""
"After we got married.""
I stared at her.
"How long have you known?""
"Two years.""
My voice lowered.
"And you never told me?""
"I didn't know what it was.""
"You searched for it.""
Silence.
That was enough.
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
"Michael, we found something.""
"What?""
"The attorney's records.""
"And?""
"The person who contacted him wasn't Vanessa.""
I froze.
"What?""
Daniel continued.
"Vanessa asked questions, but someone else filed the official documents.""
My eyes moved toward my wife.
"Who?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Someone who had access to your house.""
The room went silent.
"Who?""
"Michael...""
"Tell me.""
He took a breath.
"The request was submitted by someone using your home computer.""
I looked at Vanessa.
May you like
She looked just as shocked.
Because suddenly, she wasn't the only person with something to hide.
