Chapter 1: The Red Mark on Her Cheek

I was supposed to walk through that door at eight o'clock.

Instead, I came home at five forty-two and saw the one thing no father should ever see.

My five-year-old daughter was standing in the kitchen with tears running down her face, holding her tiny hand against her cheek.

And the woman who had just hurt her was my wife.

I had spent the entire afternoon thinking about how happy they would be when I surprised them.

The construction crew finished early, and for once, I didn't have to stay late under the hot sun. I stopped at the ice cream shop near our neighborhood and bought four cups of everyone's favorite flavors.

Chocolate for Emily.

Strawberry for Vanessa.

Vanilla for Tyler.

And coffee for myself.

I remember smiling as I pulled into the driveway.

I imagined my daughter running toward me, yelling, "Daddy!"" the way she always did.

I imagined Vanessa hugging me and telling me she missed me.

I had no idea I was about to walk into a nightmare.

The garage door opened quietly.

I carried the ice cream inside, planning to surprise them.

Then I heard my daughter's voice.

"Can I please have just one piece?""

Her voice was so soft I almost didn't hear it.

I stopped walking.

She sounded afraid.

Then came Vanessa's voice.

"Don't touch that.""

There was anger in her tone.

I took another step toward the kitchen.

"Daddy said we could have chicken tomorrow," Emily whispered.

"I'm just hungry.""

A second later, the sound hit me.

A sharp slap.

The ice cream bag almost fell from my hand.

For a moment, my brain refused to understand what I had heard.

Then I ran.

I turned the corner and saw Emily standing beside the table.

Her small fingers were near her cheek.

Her eyes were wide with shock.

In front of her was a small bowl of cold leftover rice.

Nothing else.

Across from her sat Tyler, Vanessa's eight-year-old son from her previous marriage.

His plate was overflowing.

Fried chicken.

Mashed potatoes.

Vegetables.

A full glass of orange juice.

My daughter had been looking at that food.

She wasn't stealing.

She was hungry.

"Vanessa!""

My voice made everyone freeze.

My wife turned around.

The color drained from her face.

"Michael?""

I ignored her.

I rushed to Emily and lifted her into my arms.

The second she felt me holding her, she broke down.

"Daddy...""

Her tiny arms wrapped around my neck.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words hurt more than anything.

I carried her away from the table and gently moved her hair aside.

Five red fingerprints were visible on her cheek.

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you slap my daughter?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

Her expression changed from surprise to annoyance.

"Michael, don't make this bigger than it is.""

"Bigger than it is?""

My voice shook.

"She has your handprint on her face.""

Vanessa sighed.

"She was trying to take Tyler's dinner.""

I looked at the table.

Then I looked at my daughter.

"Emily wanted one piece of chicken?""

Vanessa shrugged.

"She needs to learn boundaries.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I pointed toward Tyler's plate.

"Explain something to me. Why does he have enough food for two people while my daughter is eating cold rice?""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Tyler is a growing boy.""

"And Emily?""

"She's picky.""

Emily buried her face against my shoulder.

"I'm not picky, Daddy.""

I looked down.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?""

She hesitated.

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then she whispered something that made my entire body go cold.

"She says I'm not allowed to eat the good food when you're working.""

The room became silent.

Vanessa immediately slammed her hand onto the table.

"Emily! Stop lying!""

I stepped forward.

"Don't yell at her.""

Vanessa stared at me.

Then something changed in her expression.

The fear disappeared.

It became anger.

"You are seriously choosing her side over me?""

I tightened my arms around my daughter.

"Right now, I'm choosing my daughter.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"After everything I've done for this family?""

I stared at her.

"What exactly have you done?""

Her face hardened.

"You don't see what happens here when you're gone.""

That sentence stayed in my mind.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

I had trusted Vanessa completely.

Maybe too much.

And for the first time since we got married, I wondered what my daughter experienced when I wasn't home.

Then Emily whispered into my ear.

"Daddy...""

I lowered my head.

"What?""

Her voice trembled.

"Can I tell you something else?""

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching us.

Waiting.

I carried Emily out of the kitchen.

And before I reached the hallway, my daughter said the words that changed everything.

"Mommy makes me eat there every night...""

May you like

She pointed toward the kitchen.

"Where nobody can see me.""
